To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Dang Ford..Could use some help on my antenna....

I’ve had as much as $200 into big truck 12V power cable. Marine/grade 4AWG and hellacious long total circuit length.

Test for Negative Ground is what I always try to recommend. Todays vehicles are adhesive-bonded over being welded.

Very good series to recommend:
I felt as if I am in apprentices school again. 4awg wire, what was the drawing on that system to warrant it. Must of been a liner amp in there somewhere,

40’ total circuit length (?). I’d have to go back and search (in that thread). I was actually in need of 2AWG (can’t screw with amps, not even a little).

Manufacturer may say you can use (say) a 50A power supply . . but then you see it peak a moment over 80A at key-up. (Kind of thing).

Unless wanting to play seriously on SSB, IMO, avoiding distortion and cab RF is to limit one’s self to 50-150W per antenna. Match of TX/RX distances on AM.

Adding an amp always extra work, maintenance, and fear of letting out the smoke.

Why (NRC) AM/SSB with 50W+ is a revolution

“ . . Thanks @niceguy71! It will take a lot to train these ears.

Some people I just can't understand. They either talk to fast or have a voice that's not very detectable to my old ears.

I am trying that 901 speaker to see if I can somehow mount in over my left ear. Problem is there is no room (?)

IMG_7846.jpeg

@jcrmadden DIY solution shown is ideal.

Post in thread 'I finally did my Tram 3500 CB MAX range test'
I finally did my Tram 3500 CB MAX range test

LIDO would also work here, but would need a brace (speaker weight).

This will greatly aid hearing/understanding. Volume will be kept lower which is also beneficial.

Ear training comes with time. Most truckers employ a sheet of common phrases.

Satans Little Helpers (Skip, on AM-19) aren’t on the road and are paid to run interference by saying nothing 7/365 every daylight hour. I guarantee men, women & children have been injured or killed by this interference.

AM-19
is the Travelers Channel.

The same lies: the truckers are home on weekends. (Non-truckers don’t count?)

38-other AM channels and 80-SSB can be used.

This will not work on my 2024 F-350. There is a grab handle and the seat belt attachment is in the way. There is not enough room.

I’ve modified interiors on big trucks for “fit”. A junkyard piece to saw off grab handle is how I’d do it. Get speaker “up” over shoulder belt. Keep OEM grab handle piece in reserve.

Airbags in overhead? (If not can epoxy a board under headliner for mount). I dislike airbags. They’re installed for the stupids who won’t wear belts. No good after deployed, and many wrecks are multiple hits. The safety thing is to have one’s body stay attached to seatback. Belt below hipbones is only proper method.

The whole point to radio is to keep problems far away. The rest is in maintenance of maximum vehicle separation all day. “Below flow”, generally. (64MPH about tops for what pickups can’t do: brake in a short stop, and maneuver sharply without rolling).

Pickups are easily rolled.

Multiple hits are common.

None of this is accidental.

I lifted up the head rest and installed it in the back of the headrest pointing at both ears . Just ty raps until I get creative...

I was thinking about the headrest speaker thing also...

I believe there was a commercial about one of the newer high end cars where there are something like 6 people listening to loud music, and the driver is able to take a business call without disturbing the rest.

Ok... This one.

No reason a bunch of enterprising hams couldn't come up with a good add on system.

:)

You know,... for all of us that complain how innovation is dead in the ham community.
(No license needed for it, though lawyers would be recommended).

Thanks
Joel

I see many people making suggestions to mount an external speaker on or near the headrest. I can't help but wonder what happens to those speakers when the seatbelt pretensioner or side curtain airbags fire in an accident. Not sure I would want a 5 inch by 5 inch external speaker driven into my head.

I would have to agree with you on the placement on the left ear side. If it would fit there, which it won't, it would be right up next to the air bags. One in the B-piller and one in the left head liner. I have it behind the head rest now, but looking for a permanent solution to mounting it there.

Hence my comment about lawyers.

Looks great! You solved a lot of problems with that mounting position.

Some want to know about my return of my AT5555n2. They received my radio. They said they will return my money just as soon as they receive the manual I forgot to put in the box. Come on! I can print one out and staple it together in a few minutes. I will believe it when I see it. They seem to be pretty hard to work with. I will never buy anything there again! The manual is on the way.

I have started my permanent install. I used a Lido mount. It seem about 5” long. I would like the radio to be closer to passenger side. Right now it’s in the center of my console. I don’t know if the sell a shorter arm or maybe a guy could cut 5” off of the one I have. I emailed Lido waiting for a response. IMG_2557.jpeg

is that your truck billdean???? if so, what radio is that one? you got that done awfully quickly... I like the look of those Lido... but I think I would be cutting and altering it a lot.... I would like it to swing out.. so if no one is in the passenger seat I could swing it over there... and I would like to push it towards the dash so I could use the cups holders.... so I'm sure I would steal some of the joints off a computer monitor arm so I could tilt it up quickly so the knobs would be facing the head liner... and twist it down so the knobs would be facing the door...... the lido doesn't look like it has those quick adjustments.... but you'll make it just what you want.... that's the nice thing about installing your CB yourself.

Yes that's my truck. Amazon let me barrow a radio until my Washington comes in which should be Saturday. That is the Radioddity QT80. Nice radio but I have heard some say you shouldn't use it as a mobile. I don't know but it work pretty dang nice. That Lido mount has a lot of adjustment but it needs a shorter arm for my application. Maybe I am not understanding how to adjust it. There is really know directions..

I use my QT-80 as a mobile. Works great. I just don't have a lot of traffic down here in South East Arizona. 20250627_111006.jpg

David,
just a thought. I would mount the QT-80 on that little plastic tray.... so the radio would be upright... I did mine kind of like that...... on my 2011 Ford F150, I ordered the slide out cup holders so it can slide them in and out under the center seat... but basically the same thing you have..... I put 2X4 wood behind that plastic and screwed long wood screws into metal strips that I bent at a slight angle.... it's easy to see and adjust the CB while driving and it pretty much out of the way and is secured to the truck so maybe thieves might think twice... but having it secured covers me for theft with my insurance company.
I'm sure what you have works fine..... but sometimes you're looking for a Saturday project.

this reminds me I need to paint everything black..... I finally painted the wood black last summer but I never did the metal strips.
