Thanks for the post and the pics. I am so happy I am a homeowner and no longer have to do the apartment thing. That building was very close to the building I used to live in.

Hopefully the people will be taken care of and noone has to go homeless for the cleanup period.

According to 9news, the fire was in the basement and no mention of any injuries.

DENVER - Dozens of people and their pets were forced out of their apartment complex Saturday.

Residents were asked to leave their homes due to high levels of asbestos found in the building.

The Colorado Department of Health ordered the evacuation because the level of asbestos found in the apartment building could be two to 10 times higher than the acceptable limit, according to Denver Department of Environmental Health officials.

The evacuations started Saturday morning at the apartment building, located across from the Governor's mansion on 8th and Pennsylvania.

According to an official with the Denver Deparment of Environmental Health, the asbestos became airborne after a fire in the apartment building's basement earlier this week.

Up to 200 residents could be affected. In early afternoon residents were not allowed in their apartments to pick up valuables and pets. After a while, officials supervising the evacuation, Denver fire department and police let people back in their homes for a short time to get neccessities.

Some residents told 9News they were going to stay with family and friends, others weren't quite sure where to go.

Denver fire department officials say some residents refused to leave.

Health officials say the clean up could take anywhere from 1-3 weeks.

Red Cross has set up a temporary shelter for residents at West High School.

Tenants will be allowed to have limited escorted access to the building on Sunday, May 14, 2006, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. to collect personal effects, clothing and other essentials from their units.

During these times, ICA Restoration Experts will have representatives on site to accompany tenants to their units for this purpose. For emergency medical needs, such as access to medications, the security guards at the building will help to accommodate tenants.

Animals belonging to the building tenants are being housed temporarily at the Denver's Municipal Animal Shelter, which can be reached at 303-698-0076. If additional capacity is needed, the animals will be cared for at the Denver Dumb Friends League.

For displaced tenants seeking additional information related to this incident, please contact Susan Pass, Manager of Penwood Place Apartments at 303-832-5432 or the Situation Hotline at 720-641-4232.
