Interesting. Wonder why GRE says not. I haven't done any testing myself...just took GRE for their word. You, more than anyone probably would know Don...as much as you play with these things...lol.

Rexeived an email from the tech contact at GRE today who saw this thread. The charger IS active when the scanner is off.

Here is the email:
Hi Kevin,

I think I stumbled on a RadioReference thread where you and DonS are discussing the internal charger. I just want to confirm what Don is saying and state that I stand corrected - the charger is on full time when the radio is turned off. I'm sorry about the confusion.

Many thanks to him for clearing this up...right from GRE.

Charger timer

I stand corrected. My assumption that the charger is off when the scanner is off was based upon my observation of the timer. I set it to default (16 hours) and left the scanner on for several minutes. I verified that the timer had decremented, then turned off the scanner but left it plugged in. I let several more minutes pass, and then turned the scanner back on. Expecting to see the timer at something like 15:54:00, it had reset and was at 15:59:58 and decreasing.

In light of the recent revelation from GRE that the charger remains on when the scanner if off, I took a voltmeter to the terminals and sure enough, there is voltage when the scanner is off (12.6 volts unloaded). I then set the timer to 1 hour and turned off the scanner. At 1 hour, 5 minutes, leaving the scanner off, I again checked the voltage and got 12.6 volts.

So, while the scanner does indeed continue to charge while off, it would appear that the timer is disabled, or maybe it defaults based on battery type. Perhaps tonight before I retire, I’ll set the battery type to NiCad (8 hour default) and check the voltage tomorrow morning. That should clear up any question about the timer.
