The underground explosion, and resulting fire, and smoke was a caused by electrical problems with the underground cables in the area.

During the evacuation, outside of police headquarters, an officer was shot. It appears he was shot in the left hand, and thigh. It is unknown if it was a regular officer, or reserve officer. He was rushed to the hospital in a police car, and is in temporary serious condition, but expected to recover. It's unknown how he was shot, and/or if it was an accidental shooting, possibly self inflicted.

Local 4 is reporting that he is a police reservist and he accidentally shot himself in the leg and arm as he "was checking the safety on his weapon." They also state that he was sitting in a marked police car outside of the headquarters building when the incident occured.

DetNews.com is reporting that he was a police reservist who accidentally shot himself in the arm and thigh "as he tried to take the trigger lock off a Glock handgun." The article also says he was taking the gun into the building to have it registered.

Fox 2 reports that police aren't sure if he is a police officer, or a reserve officer, or a civilian. They report he was shot in the hand and leg and was rushed in a scout car to DRH. They don't know why he was there but that he was not in a police car when the incident happened.

So, I guess we can surmise that a man who may (or may not) be a Detroit police officer or reservist shot himself in the arm, or (maybe) in the hand, and somewhere in the vicintity of his thigh while he was either walking into the building or while possibly (not) sitting in a marked police car. And he was trying to check the safety on a Glock handgun (which doesn't have a safety) while removing the trigger guard from the weapon.

Soooo, who knows. Hope he is ok, though.

That's the second reservest police officer incident this week. Hamtramck just had one a couple days ago where the officer slammed a teen against the wall for having a hoodie on during the national anthem. That may seem disrespectful, but is it really against the law? This Detroit reservest shooting his hand probably does not have any formal training. I own a Glock myself and would never mess with the safety on the trigger, it's just common sense. I personally think that reservests pose a liability to themselves, the public, and the city they serve.

I don't believe they are any bigger of a liability then any commissioned officer. They have similar training, still have to qualify the same course every year. Most often the same inservice training is available to them as well as commissioned officers.

Reserves are underrated to the departments and the community they serve.

Had it not been for reserves Clay Twp wouldn't have a patrol most of the time. DPD uses them all the time. Yes some reflects on the image of all reserves but more so reflects the department they work for. Blame the department for training I mean look at DPD lately. They are the joke of Wayne County.

Even my buddy that works for DPD is disghusted with the PD the way things are going lately. He is trying to get out of there but not many departments will hire DPD officers especially with their recent events.

Im glad I didn't take the job with DPD when it was offered to me in 2000. I couldn't handle this mess. Not to mention the racial inequality there and the tension between races on the department. Its a Department stuck in a low paying ghetto with more crime then cops and more crime then money can afford to try to stop.

3rd incident... Another DPD reserve had his weapon and badge stolen out of his car when he stopped to work out
