Is there a clear cut difference in performance between a Remtronix say the 842S and Diamond SRH77CA, or any comparable antenna, I remember formerly having Watson W881 BNC antennas years ago. TIA

Depends on what you want to use them for. The Remtronix is a scanner antenna covering VHF and UHF frequencies. The Diamond is a 2M/70Cm amateur antenna. The SRH77CA is widely used as a scanner antenna but its response will fall off outside the ham bands. I use them on HT's for their intended purpose. However, they perform adequately on frequencies used by the local fire departments (151-156MHz) and law enforcement (460MHz). They are useless on VHF low band and barely useful on 800MHz.

I have never used used a Remtronix antenna but I have used a variety of similar antennas on scanners. They perform better than the stock antennas that come with the radios. The best thing to do is to try one and see how it works for your situation. If your interest is primarily centered on one band, I would get a monoband antenna. If your interests are multi-band then any antenna will be a compromise.

Is there a clear cut difference between antennas? You can only find out by experimenting.

I have a heavy base of UHF frequencies, some air band, the railroads (160/161MHz), and VHF frequencies across the rest of the VHF band (Erie Co, Niagara County, and related northwest New York frequencies, but not much aside from that, there may be a spot of 800MHz but all conventional and not very active at all)

Howd this turn out?
