How will this affect those using scanners?
Most scanners will no longer be capable of monitoring our channels. In order for a scanner to access our digital channels, it must be digital-capable and programmed with our unique access code(s). Those access codes will not normally be made available to members of the general public.
I emailed the PD PIO as soon as I got this to see if he could find out if this is a NAC or if they will be encrypted, as of right now he has not gotten back to me.
I seem to think it's just a NAC.
I also asked, in the event they will be encrypted, what they plan to do to allow media access to the radio system. This is the first "major" city in the Sacramento, Stockton, Modesto area that may be going encrypted and my station is already concerned about not being able to monitor them.
