I am looking for a recommendation for a digital scanner. A lot of towns on the South Shore in Massachusetts have gone digital. I am used to the old school radio shack scanners. I appreciate any recommendations or advice you have.

So it looks like you're a newbie and have only made two posts. The best we have here is the the South Shore of Massachusetts and some towns are going digital.

So given that I have nothing to work with as to what your scanning needs are so I would just go with a general recommendation.

Look at the database and see if these systems are Phase 1 or Phase 2 simulcast systems that would be susceptible to LSM interference. As the country switches over to P2 simulcast you will need an LSM capable radio.

As far as used Motorola gear you're probably best going with a scanner.

The smart rule of thumb would be get the latest most expensive radio because if you don't whatever you buy might work today but it won't work in the future so it might be worth the two or three hundred dollars more you would spend now to be able to listen for a long time. When you look at the database make sure the systems or channels or whatever you want to listen to is not encrypted.

If you want to give more information like locations, systems Etc. You'll probably get more help.

An SDS 100 might serve you well if you can afford it.

The towns' police departments that have gone P25 in Southeast Massachusetts are simply conventional UHF P25.

Well that would indicate that any of the scanners made after rebanding would be okay. Even if they are over 10 year old technology. As long as they trunk and they are digital you could probably get away with it for two hundred bucks... the guys in Massachusetts on this forum know best.

When Radio Shack went out of business I picked up a bunch of old GRE rebranded RadioShack scanners. They are still for sale today from Whistler except a lot more expensive now than they were when I picked them up from my local RS stores LOL.

Seriously, you guys on the Massachusetts forum know best. I lived for a short while, a little less than a year in Massachusetts in the Wilbraham area. Right outside of Springfield. Everything then of course was VHF low simplex except for the Massachusetts State Police... VHF High repeaters.

To the o p... You're in good hands with the locals in your area.
