Hello All

I am interested in purchasing a digital scanner I thought I would come on the forum and ask the pros here what is the best one to buy spending about 700.00 dollars. I would like it to pick up O.P.P. and what ever else is digital in the essex county area including Michigan.

Thankyou to all.

This is an excellent time to purchase from the US as our dollar is strong .
Also, there is an impending 1 % drop in the GST looming , if you are purchasing in Canada.

If you can hold on until late May or June, you could mail order the latest and greatest Uniden digital model(BCD996T) . Check out this link from Grove Enterprises (Monitoring Times people) http://www.grove-ent.com/unidenscanners.html . Good prices.:)
They list three other digital models as well BCD396T , BC296D and the BC796D
Then of course , there is also Radio Shack and their Pro 96 or 2096.
Check out www.radioshack.com to see how their stock situation is.

Yes for OPP (other than encrypted) . RCMP (no, they use AEGIS Digital VoiceGuard encryption)
I'm not sure about MSP, you may want to pop over to the Michigan Radio Discussion Forum and ask the locals.

The only problem is lying to the inspectors at the border (don't do it) .

Besides OPP you will be able to hear MTO Enforcement and MNR
Conservation officers on Fleetnet, at least those that are not encrypted.
Tendency is for PDs to move to digital, which can be either
EDACS ProVoice (we're all out of luck there); or P25 (OK,
but sadly the tendency for municipal forces is towards
encrypting).

There are increasing reports of other users going to P25,
including Corrections Canada. It doesn't hurt to have the
capability (I have not yet upgraded yet...).

Michigan (MSPS) as I understand can be picked up with newer
Uniden digital scanners, excepting the older BC250d/785d
which don't handle "pure" digital systems (9600bps control
channel). RadioShack PRO-96/2096 would also work.

What is encrypted I have a BC780XLT and I love it but I was thinking of up grading to a digital. Do you think this is a good idea at this time.

Thanks

Upgrading to a digital scanner ain't gonna help you listen to encrypted comms one little bit. There are scattered pockets of encrypted/unmonitorable agencies across Ontario. I'm not sure about your area (Windsor?) but London, Durham Regional, Niagara Regional and Peterborough are the 'big' police services that are encrypted/unmonitorable.

Most of the Essex County police departments are now digital AND encrypted.

City of Windsor is still in the clear.
