Are you referring to the display backlight, or the programmable Alert LED.

As mentioned, you can set the backlight setting, either on the scanner's menu, or in Sentinel, to come on when the squelch is open.

If, instead, you are looking at the alert LED, it will only come on for a short period. You cannot change it so that it stays on for the entire conversation.

On my SDS-100 I set the display to go blank and lights up when there is a transmission, also has a light flash every few seconds to tell you the scanner is running. Does the 436 has the same option?

While you can make that setting via the scanner's menu, it would be better to make it in Sentinel. Otherwise, if you left Sentinel 'as is', and only change it on the scanner, the next time you write the database, or a new (or recently updated) Favorites list to the scanner, it would reset to whatever the setting was in Sentinel.

No, you don't have the same 'blank screen' option on the 436HP.
