• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Good evening,

I live in an area with a half dozen or so DMR users. Is there a handheld that will scan as well as serve as a transmitter? Or just a radio/scanner in general for DMR listening?

Any of them will scan. I'm running Kenwood NX-1300's that will scan (but I don't let my user use that function). Kenwood NX-3x00 series will scan.

Keep in mind that a scanner makes a much better, well, scanner since it gives you more options. Transceivers will scan, but the tend to be slower, programming is more difficult, and can cost quite a bit more depending on what you are looking for.

I was looking at the d878uv or the II version. Mmckenna, I’ve got an sds100 as well as a few SDRs, I know they’re better, I guess I just wanted something else to learn to use lol. I’ll check your Kenwood out as well!

Any specific XPR? Not necessarily the best but best value?
They will all scan if you program scan to a button. The XPR3500 are a nice price point, used to be able to get them for 100 bucks. The XPR radios are limited to a 16 channel scan list. Don't forget to include your RX lists for the DMR channels.

The Kenwoods don't need an RX list, but IRC, the NX1300 are limited to 16 channels a zone, though you can do multi-zone scan.

I understand. My sds with upgrade picks up all the dmr frequencies that I am aware of. However, does the RRDB identify dmr frequencies that require an SN? I don't think that it does at least I have not seen a designator for my local DMRs.

If it is part of a trunked system, you are very likely out of luck, at least if you want to trunktrack it.
It should be fairly obvious if it is trunked or not and would not need an additional flag beyond saying the system type. If it doesn't say Tier III, Cap+, Con+, XPT or any other brandname, you are probably looking at conventional.
