I have not heard any updates. I do know things are going well and I wonder if it will ever be finished. So far only two channels have been updated and it's been five years.

On hold

The latest information is that the vhf upgrade is on hold until a timing issue can be worked out. Timing refers to how the various transmitters are covering the county. Some of the new sites are going into the same areas as others and causing overlapping issues. They feel if they can time how signals arrive, it will solve the problems for the most part. Now some areas receive several signals and it sounds like an echo because they vary in arrival time.

Interesting listening tonight here outside of Corbett, OR
2 1/2 miles south of the Columbia river in the
Columbia River Gorge Area - Line of sight
south into the Willamette Valley.

I'm copying Douglas County Sheriff on 155.700 MHz
loud and clear on my older dual band Yaesu FT-90R
mini-mobile (as a base), into a 6 dB Dual Band
omnidirectional vertical antenna at 610' AMSL.

Bad weather takes down system

Portions of the new vhf communication system was taken off line last night. We had high winds throughout the county most of the afternoon and evening. The dispatch center lost contact with the coastal area and sheriff units are going through Reedsport PD for communications. Several channels went off line intermittently all evening. This is at least the second time wind has caused problems with the new system. Apparently microwave dishes are not stable enough to withstand wind gusts and windy weather is disabling links.

Another update

Communications Director Ray Duncan now says the new system and upgrades are to be all up and running by this July. I now I have reported several updates before, but these always come from official sources. So now we will wait and see.
The Public Works Dept. for most of their communications is now using the new trunk system. They still are using 159.0000 but are to be off of it soon so it can be used as one of the new fire frequencies. Douglas Electric (a local power company) is also moving onto the trunk system as a paying user. Mr. Duncan also reports that everything is working well. Something that most users and listeners are laughing about because it is not.

154.370 Scott Mountain Powered Down?

Well, with the change to repeatered operation on 154.370, did they end up powering down Scott Mountain? Normally, I hear them with a weak to good signal in Salem but haven't heard a thing from them on 154.370 so my suspicion is that they placed repeaters at various sites around the county and no longer need such high power on Scott. Do any of you somewhat distant from Douglas County notice any decreased (or inaudible) signal from Scott Mountain?

154.370 Follow-up

A few hours after posting this message early Sunday, I noticed that I *was* receiving the repeater operation on 154.370. This lasted during the morning hours but I didn't notice it in the afternoon so it may be due to weather (ducting) changes during the day. Will see how this plays out over time/weather conditions.

The input frequency for 154.370 is the old Public Works channel 159.000 and the input for 154.445 is 158.880 and they use 151.4 for their ctcss/pl tone.
