Not so, there is nothing hard/tough with reception.

Simulcast yes, but with a little experimentation as you had already done [based on user suggestions] you can get it right.

Now sit back and listen away

Plus 800 mhz can be tough to receive anyway. Unless you live at the top of the hill at Dean Estates!

I have been listening all day and there is so much crazy stuff going on. Yeah I am done experimenting for now anyway. There is so much coming in on both radios. I used to monitor my local airport which is only a few miles to my southeast. There are hardly any flights. Its so weird not seeing planes flying out there. The departure path is right out my window and there normally are a lot of planes going by. But its dead quiet. Even the state prison is very quiet. Normally the guards are pretty active. I listen to them on an LTR system. Seems there are many calls for people drunk, people falling down, people falling down and bumping their heads.....A few calls today for people just freaking out.

I added the RISCON East zone with Search ID turned on about 48 hours ago and have gotten no hits at all. I don't think anyone is broadcasting there yet.
A suggestion to those who are worried as to what departments should go into which zone: there are very few agencies that broadcast in more than one zone (I think Warwick FD might do both north and south). I put all track groups in all 4 zones. There seems to be almost no overlap. Then, when I travel by car, I pick up new agencies as my location changes within the state.

The East zone is active. I have been getting hits all weekend.
I am pretty sure my issue with receiving the East zone is my location. The control channel isn't being picked up. I get 1 or 2 bars and "NFM" scrolling through screen as it scans. The weird thing is I can hear the 388mhz Newport Naval Base P25 system with no problem. Very low signal but the calls come in fine.....and thats with using an 800mhz mobile antenna!

East Zone: Jamestown, Newport, Middletown, Portsmouth, Little Compton, Tiverton. Its up, its running and all the users in the East Zone had their radios updated prior to the turn on of the zone. All the TG's for those towns will be East Zone only.

I said before, huge changes and upgrades in RISCON over the past decade or so and they will keep coming. So, PLEASE make sure you are using the latest confirmed system information before complaining about it.

What about State Police? Will they remain on the South zone or are they able to roam onto the East zone?

The Uniden scanners are notoriously not great receivers on simulcast systems. With the exception of the SDS series but even they have issues from what I understand. If you want pro quality reception get a Unication G4/G5

Looks like site 2 (south) is down for maintenance? Looks like a new site (15) has been added.

Ya,ya ya I deserve that! Adios site 2. WA1LAD maybe you can educate me on why they need to update site IDs when upgrading? Why can't the ID be kept the same? Something had to be added or taken away no? Was it just that new Charlestown tower? Is that a master site?

Site ID changed due to the fact that new gear was provisioned and installed prior to the cutover. Site ID's cannot be the same when doing this so it had to change. That procedure allows for minimal downtime....like 4-5 hours instead of 3-4 days. Old, unsupported equipment was removed and replaced with new, currently supported modern equipment and Charlestown is just a lowly subsite, not prime or master in any way shape or form.

Thank you I feel smarter. Last question ( I think ) why do department radios not need to be reprogrammed/updated but certain scanners (not all) do? Site ID locking? CC? Bad programming? I never had to touch my Homepatrol1 but I needed to reprogram the G5.

Departments affected by the change had their radios updated prior to the cutover. As for the scanners, read the manual or contact the manufacturer and ask. I have no idea and it didn't adversely affect my scanners so its a moot point for me.

A G4/G5 is not a Scanner

Most likely site ID locking. The scanners don't give a sh-t about the site ID , RFSS, WACN, etc etc.
The G5 being a prosumer receiver, probably does. Especially if the G5 relies on neighbors for tracking.
