EAGLE (AP) - Eagle County officials are hoping to allow residents to receive evacuation orders or severe-weather updates on cell phones, personal digital assistants and e-mail.

The county already sends emergency messages by landline phone to residents. But county Emergency Management Director Barry Smith estimates that 40 percent of residents have only a cell phone.

Smith says he's close to coming up with about 67-thousand dollars for the software that allows messages to be sent to electronic devices.

He says Vail has pledged 23-thousand dollars for computers to run it.

Residents would have to sign up to get messages sent to their cell phones, but it would be free.

Smith says the system wouldn't be installed until at least October.

Will this system work? It would replace reverce 911 I think...
