I had to ask "customer service" for my new HP-2. It's ONLY in your registered products list.
Log in and look in registration.

I had no idea I was purchasing a scanner that wasn't fully functional.
Not on the box or the Uniden HP-2 web page is there any mention of the need to purchase an "Extreme key".
Only after I found manuals (for the HP-1) in the HP-2 software folder was there any mention of it.
Links in the pdf manuals are also broken.
That's right, there is no manual for the HP-2 yet.

I can find no reference anywhere to an Extreme Upgrade option for the HP-2. Even on pages and websites that mention the HP-2, all discussion about Extreme reverts to references to the HP-1.

Did you register your HP2? If so, there should be an upgrade link.

Not sure where you are getting your information, but the HP-2 owner's manual is available right here:

HomePatrol2 < HomePatrol < TWiki

The Extreme Upgrade is not "needed" to operate your scanner.

The extreme upgrade for the HP-2 IS referred to and explained on the site linked above - and pages 3 and 4 of the owner's manual.

There is no need to purchase the upgrade unless you want the upgraded features. I have never heard of anyplace that says they are included with the basic setup.

I've updated HomePatrolExtreme < HomePatrol < TWiki to be more generic as to HP-1 and HP-2. It has all the instructions for purchasing the upgrade.

As noted, this upgrade is not needed for any advertised features of the product. We have to pay additional royalties when the features are activated, so giving it away for free is not an option.

The HP2 is by all means fully functional out of the box. The Extreme Upgrade is optional. I purchased it shortly after I bought mine. I don't use the optional features often but its good to know they are available when I do need them such as when systems in my area are being changed or when I want to control and/or stream the HP-2 remotely.

But, yeah, right of the box it is a very usable and very user-friendly scanner. I would have to say THE most user-friendly scanner I have ever used (going back to the crystal days:) Type in a Zip Code, choose what services you want to hear and you're done.

Think "Option". Let's say you buy a new car. Let's call it "Brand A". I comes with a carport full of "Standard Options". Assume that (after careful consideration) 88% of the buyers of "Brand A" select the "Standard Option". Their new cars are fully functional.

Let us also assume that a small percentage (<2%) of the buyers of "Brand A" select an option called "Performance Package". This may include Bigger Engine, Bigger Brakes, Turbocharger, Special Tires, Advanced Suspension, 6 Speed Manual Transmission, etc.

The installation of this "Performance Package" Option does NOT make this car "fully functional". In fact, for many of the said 88% that purchased the "Standard Option" vehicle, the addition of these performance enhancements would only endanger the life of the driver, and the public in general.

But the buyer has no idea what options are available or needed if they are buying from the "Uniden" store.

All I want is for Uniden and dealers do is be up front in their web page / advertizing that the "upgrade" is available and necessary to what I think should be basic scanner functions. Not hide it in the manual. Not have the buyer discover the "greyed out" buttons and have to search the web to find out why.

I'm not asking for a free upgrade. I'll pay for the upgrade because I need it to make it fully fictional. But this should be included on all HP-2s since the additional $50 is not that much for something that's already over $500.

If you don't know about the WiKi or homepatrol.com you are at a dead end with the Uniden website.
I've never thought a scanner couldn't add frequencies or do searches as a normal function!

Back to the car comparison. It's like you get only the streaming WiFi services or station presets in the car that the maker wants you to have and there's no way to add your own unless you buy the upgrade. And they don't tell you about it when you buy the car.

Thanks for the update. I was reluctant to purchase an upgrade from any of the previously referenced links because I could not be sure it would work properly on the HP-2.

I'll add that you can program anything you want into the HomePatrol using the included Sentinel Software, no Extreme Upgrade required.

Also btw it is not fully functional right out of the box if there are menu items that do not work.

Other than this little item, it is an impressive radio.
