• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

My Icom F3161T that I have had for almost 3 years has started giving me some trouble (or maybe I'm just now noticing it).

The first issue is a delay in unmuting the audio on carrier squelch channels. It always seems to cut off around the first 100-150ms of CSQ transmissions (slightly less than it takes to decode CTCSS/DCS). Channels with CTCSS/DCS on receive seem to take the normal ~200ms to open up. I have tried everything I can think of to stop it, including making sure power save was off, disabling MDC DOS (even though MDC itself isn't enabled) and making sure channels are set to analog only (even though there's no digital board); all with no success. I have never had a problem like this on any other radio.

Another issue is a weird pulsing hum/whine noise in the TX audio when the mic gain is set at 2 or above, getting worse as the gain is increased. It kind of sounds similar to alternator whine I sometimes hear in mobiles. It isn't very consistent and doesn't do it on all channels, sometimes goes away after I transmit a couple of times, and stops when I put my finger very close to or on the mic. I believe it may be RF getting into the mic and causing problems. Also at one point I had problems with what sounded like wind noise or flutter as I pressed and released the PTT, but it seems to have gone away.

Anybody ever had any of these problems or know how to fix them?
Thanks in advance!

If its cover under warranty send it in to get it fixed. It is RF getting back in. The antenna connector needs to be re soilder or tighten down.

I had a feeling that's what it was. Unfortunately it is no longer covered under warranty; so unless it could cause other problems, I may just deal with it since I don't use the radio very often any more.

Any idea about the delay in receiving CSQ transmissions? Also I forgot to mention that when using priority scan, the priority sample time is also around 100-150ms long. My F5021 and the F33G I had did not have nearly as long of a priority sample. Is this just inherent to the F3161?

Icom Repair

Send it to I-A's midwest repair station:

AJR International
300 Regency Drive
Glendale Heights, IL 60139

Phone: (800) 232 - 3965

They are the official Icom repair station for the central US, do excellent work and will have it back typically in about two weeks. Call first then send it with detailed issues on paper. They will call back with a diagnosis and charges. Flat rate repair to fix anything they consider broken, plus alignment to factory spec should be about a hundred bucks.
