Interesting find...

Go to https://www.radioreference.com/db/fcc/callsign/$ and replace the $ with the call sign you want to search. I tried several and it appears to pull recent license info. Appears to work for public safety and business LMR licenses, but not amateur or GMRS call signs.
Using this one for ham works for me. Even mine was pulled in and it was issued on Saturday morning/Friday night last week while ULS was already down during the scheduled portion of the outage.

That is a longtime feature of RR.

Maybe the FCC ULS was hacked by someone who will update the ULS frontend beyond 1998?
My state government in its infinite wisdom cheapness decided to replace a bridge and only put 1 sidewalk on the new one (the old one had 2 sidewalks)

For this reason I'd rather ULS simply be kept in working order rather than be uprooted and replaced by some modern monstrosity that'll be 10x worse than what exists

I have to agree. It's 'just worked' in it's recalcitrant way for 2 decades. It will continue to do so until someone decides that 'zoMg we nEeD thi$ neW h0++Nes$" and it becomes a bloated disgusting HTML5 & CSS soggy diaper that most websites have become now. Can you imagine what it would have been like if they adopted Flash or Shockwave 20 years ago in an effort to stay current & hip?

Around 2009, there was an initiative to replace ULS with a project that was called "CLS" (consolidated licensing system). It was supposed to be really slick, have features like cataloging receiver frequencies (like ISED Canada), but never adequately funded and many of the people retired in the 2010s. It evaporated and no one ever spoke of it again. Since then, new features in ULS have just been a series of un-funded patches that they had to scrape up money to perform.

I wouldn't be surprised if someone "broke it" and they're scurrying around trying to find the last working version without losing whatever sequential data they've put into it since the last backup.

Another thing with these sites is redundancy. It can load on old hardware/software, even little cheap 80 laptops with 2gb of RAM. Its quick (sometimes) and keeps old technology in the loop.

I don't believe the General Menu Reports was ever down. It was always just the ULS. (Which is short for UseLesS) You'd get the GMR listing but then when you went to click on a specific license, it was d.o.a. Which it still is...

As someone who spends 90% of his scanner listening, searching. I find the Radio Reference FCC search incredibly handy to have. It's a very nice alternative to the FCC database. It doesn't always list everything but it's still a very nice tool to have.

I just tried to do a GENMEN search. That errored out, too.

There was a separate IT group doing the GENMEN user interface. It was a lot friendlier than ULS, and one used to be able to do a search ranked on frequency and distance, which was useful when looking for frequencies to license up. I forgot why I called them, but I ended up speaking with the lead on the GENMEN project in like 2003. He was into Icelandic waterfalls and vacationed there frequently, so he named his servers after them: "Gullfoss," "Svartifoss," and "Dettifoss." There may have been more waterfall servers.

Maybe part of something more? We'll know in a few days...

Thanks
Joel

I think it is likely that the cyber attack has either damaged ULS or the FCC IT has pulled the plug until the attacks subside. I have never seen ULS down this long for maintenance.

It's not strictly the ULS that's down FYI. Other selected FCC databases are out as well.

The general menu reports system uses hardware installed in 2010. With the UseLesS being down, the status of the General Menu Reports is almost pointless. They also have (had?) a mirror to the general menu reports, but it stopped working years ago and frankly, I don't think they care about it. Usually when the GMR system goes down, a ticket gets it restored on the next business day, which will be Tuesday.

You may be right. I never considered ULS to be particularly robust. It seemed to be patch on top of patch, and that seemed very fragile. Either way, I doubt anyone at the Commission will candidly make a public announcement of what really happened aside from a Congressional inquiry. With all the money that the FCC has raised and applied to the national debt, one would think Congress would allow the Commission to retain a certain percentage in order to modernize their operations (can't make money without reinvesting some of that money in internal processes).
