Actually, there is no way to add them to the database; there's no "Input PL" field for them.

FDNY doesn't use repeaters in the traditional sense. It's technically a full-duplex system where they inject the receive audio into the base audio output when the mixer is manually turned on, so it behaves like a repeater. For that reason, the mobiles are listed separately in the database, they are not in the "Input" field.

Having a PL input tone that's different from the repeater's output tone is a good way to keep unauthorized persons from kerchunking or otherwise interfering with the system's operation. My local VFD down in Virginia does it and the only way I found the input tone was to scan the input during a fire with my VX-5R, so it can be done if you know how and have the right radio that searches and shows PL frequencies when heard.

That's common in most areas. It's different here in Columbus. Most of our county and state use trunked systems. But nearly every department and county around that doesn't have a system has the same pl and dpl tones on the input and on the repeater. This also includes amateur repeaters and other public companies. I guess it's just a trend.

NYC's new standard is to mix up all the PL's if you look at the old FDNY VHF all had 186.2 and ems 82.5

Now the inputs and outputs are all somewhat random. It works out better for scanners in the end.
If you had a wideband scanner with the small pl on two adjacent channels you would hear bleed over from both. Now you can put in the PL and highlight the one you really want, not saying you won't get reception issues but you should only hear the one.

i seriously do not mean this to offend. i just wish the fdny citywide desk would stop leaving the mixer open after the end of some messages. it becomes annoying.

The classic quote of "if it aint broke...." could never be more true with their system, but the federal government will fix that soon enough.
