I've been attempting to give Bob RXR a hand cleaning up some outstanding trash that has been put into the wiki, and one particular subject seems to stand out - files that are not used by any wiki page
In general, there are 2 basic commands for putting an image or file onto an article;
- Image This command can be used for JPEGs, JPGs, .png and gif file types. This entry in the MediaWiki language reference explains all the options very well...
Help:Images - MediaWiki
* Media This command is used when trying to build a hyperlink to a file that requires an external application to view. The most common examples would be PDF files, XLS spreadsheet files from Excel or zip (compressed) files. Here is a simple example of how to use the Media command; edit this article and look at the coding for 'First File' and 'Second File'
Montgomery County (MD) Fire Tone Outs - The RadioReference Wiki
Please keep in mind that it's the user's responsibility to put a particular file onto a page, not the admins. Right now we have about 30 files that are unattached, and it's going to take some effort to find out whether these files are outdated or they need to go somewhere...
Which brings me to my next point. You can update a file that's already on the wiki - just give it the same name as it already has. If, however, a file is out of date please send a note to Bob RXR or Bezking so the file can be dropped.
With over 5000 pages and almost 5 years of time, it's bound to have outdated information in it. Remember, it's you who play the biggest role in putting data into - and, at times, cleaning up outdated data from - the wiki. The more folks that get involved in doing the cleaning when it's needed, the more accurate the data will be
best regards..Mike
