I saw, I gave him a phone call about it. His answering machine picked-up, so I left a message. Hopefully he'll get it soon.

I actually caught it last night and was shocked.
Its a shame. I referenced that site all the time for data on interference issues here at work.

That's a shame.

I frequented there to get local info for my area in NJ.

Do you think he might change his mind and bring the site back?

Did I miss something here??? The site is gone for good??? I love RR, but Fordyce was the best local reference... I know it was alot of the same people from here, but we seemed to bring up more local detail there. I certainly hope he rebuilds his site and we all try to chip in and help keep the info up!!

While the Fordyce site was an invaluable reference, Jim was distant at best. He never answered e-mails, and I feel he never actaully helped moderators. He just popped on and off whenever he felt like it. I had to wait WEEKS for answers to very basic questions or requests. The moderators had to fend for themselves and clean up messes, Jim was nowhere to be found! He didn't even have the common courtesy to e-mail us when he decided to shut the board down. I am not critizing for his actions, it just I feel he should have e-mailed the moderators before hand to get their input. When I started moderating the Bergen County Board back when it was on the other server, I took my responsibility seriously.I did the best I could but I felt nobody was there when I had a question. There wasn;t any definite answers for anything, just some basic guidelines and nothing else. On the one hand I appreciate the fact I was able to help on the other I was frusterated I had to "fend for myself"!!

I totally agree with jaymatt1978 that Jim was "distant at best" and didn't answer emails. He was always like that and I think we all just learned to deal with it.

As for the moderators having to fend for themselves. the reason he, as the webmaster, appointed moderators was so he didn't have to police the boards. He gave his moderators full power to act as they saw fit; IE: to set guidlines for those who chose to post, to edit, delete and lock threads and to delete posts and threads that they felt were inappropriate. When you're in charge of something you do fend for yourself most of the time. You handle the problems and make the decisions. The only thing I felt, as a moderator, that I would ever have to contact Jim about would be to have an unruly member removed from the board. Anything else, I would handle myself, and I think that's the way Jim wanted it with all of his moderators.

As for him contacting the moderators first, before shutting the board down, he was in a very tough situation. His board was hacked because someone was out to get him. The hacker changed and deleted the forum database, according to his message to the members. I am sure if he contacted us, the moderators, about what we felt he should do, we would have all said please try to make the necessary repairs and get the board going again. We don't know the exact extent of the damage that was done, but it sounds like it was severe. If it was an easy fix I'm sure he would have brought it back. However, it probably would have taken a lot of time and effort accomplish that. Once he did get it up and working who's to say the hacker wouldn't appear again and do the same thing. All of that which he did would have been done for naught. Did he want to have to deal with that ? Apparently not, and I don't blame him. As I said, someone was out to get him and sometimes low lifes like that just don't give up.

I will miss the site as much as anyone else. It's very unfortunate that it's gone due to the actions of a very sick and evil individual. His target was Jim, but unfortunately we were all his victims. I compare him to Bin Laden, nothing more than a parasite.

If anyone wants to help me design it, I'll get a forum site up and running here on my own server.

I'm sure we could come up with an easy-to-remember domain name that hasn't been taken yet, and get another metro-NYC-dedicated board up. I'd be more than happy to donate the hardware...

I understand what you 're saying DJ88 and think I did a good job as a moderator although I have to admit I nevere had any problems in the Bergen County section nor did I see real problems in any other NJ board.. Yes I am aware of the difficults especially in the NY City sections, although from what I gather it was becoming more of a problem recently.
As for contacting the members I think you misunderstood my position. I didn't want him to ask my permission to shut the board down, after all it is HIS BOARD. On the other hand if he expected the moderators to control their sections, he should have told us what was going on,. I didn't even know there was a hacker until I read about it on RR! So again while I understand and basically agree with what you are saying that Jim didn't have a choice about what he did, I am still a bit annoyed he didn't notify the moderators privately of his decision. It's something called common courtesy!

Justin is correct when it comes to Jim not responding to messages. For the longest time I tried to become moderator of the Passaic County NJ board since the post was vacant from its existence. Several emails to Jim, no replies. Finally after awhile out of nowhere, I was made moderator. When he upgraded the boards,it took ages to get new info to login as moderator and to become co-moderator of Bergen County with Justin. In fact I was never notified that the bbs was being upgraded. I signed on one day and could not login.

It was a great board. All of us mods I'm sure will miss it as a resource for some questions or information that cant always be answered by all of the frequency related sites out there. Sometimes on the boards there are people who have the answers to questions that are not in some book such as scannermaster etc. There were LEOs and Firefighters and EMS people that frequented that board that were invaluable sources of information.

With all that said, we still have the RR boards.

jaymatt,

Jim said the forum database was deleted by the hacker. Did you ever stop to think that maybe the the member profiles, that contain our email addresses, were also destroyed or deleted ? If they were and he didn't have that information in any other place, how was he supposed to contact us and let us know what he was doing ? He did post a message telling everyone what happened and that he wasn't going to restore the site. I thought that was pretty nice of him. If your feelings are hurt, that's unfortunate. I have no problem with it at all. I will not be replying any further. No sense in dragging this out.

DJ88,
Yes I understand the problems with the hacker and I sympathize, but did if every occur to you that Jim should have had the moderator's e-mail seperately off forydce.org? There was only what twenty, thirty moderators tops? I don't expect him to e-mail every single member of the board, but he should have had the forsight to cintact us if something was wrong
