Within Forest Co. and slightly out, coverage is for the most part quite good. The only problems I have mobile seem to be on Hwy C in the east and also in the trees in the far North East corner. I have a regular recreational spot I stay at in the Tipler area of Florence Co. which is only a couple miles from Forest and I have to park in just the right spot to get it to come in. Portable you can forget about.

My cottage is in the Amberg area in Marinette County and I have a bear of a time getting them in on a commercial vertical up about 40 feet and my elevation there is quite high as well. I take Hwy C from Wausaukee to go to the casino in Carter and to some other outdoor spots in that area and when you're on the move the signal can be crummy. Once you get closer to Hwy 32, all is good for the most part.

How is forest counties coverage? I will being going up there in a couple of weekends.

The coverage is terrible in the northern part of county. It's not unusual to hear dispatch tell mobiles their signal is 10-1 (weak) when they are up around Highway 70. The towers are located in the southern part of the county, Crandon & Wabeno.

Ok, at least it's not just me :) In that far northern section, I take 70 between Eagle River and Tipler and it doesn't seem as horrible farther west but the tower in Crandon would explain that.

I think they need more towers

They should of put that tower on 52 and over in Blackwell and one in Popple River. This county needs at least one more repeater for adaquit coverage. Or some place around those locations.

Two 400 ft Alltel cell towers are used by the Sheriff Dept. The first tower is located on East Hill in Crandon, the second tower is located on HWY 52 just west of Wabeno. If the Sheriff Dept. wanted too, they could use another Alltel tower located 3 miles north of Popple River in Long Lake.

Quite a few VHF transmitters on that tower now already. Florence will be occupying space with 3 VHF repeaters for public safety and there is also a US Forest Service repeater up there along with a pager in the 152 band. Rumor has it Alltel does not charge rental fees for gov't and public safety so a popular choice for sites probably even if not the best for coverage.

Funny how 10-15 years ago they didn't even have 911 or an ATM machine in the Long Lake & Tipler area now you have all of that and digital wireless while sitting in the tavern right in Long Lake. :) I'm in that area regularly...love it. Don't love the recent sale of land to Illinois developers however. Even the girl scouts sold out.

Thanks for the info, I didn't know Florence County was moving to the Long Lake tower. The move should greatly increase coverage in the southwest part of the county where its now poor.

A couple years ago while on business in Long Lake around Labor Day, I heard a Forest County mobile near Highways 70 and 55 actually calling Iron County, Michigan on Point to Point to have them relay a wrecker request message to Forest County HQ... that's got to be frustrating.

What I could hear

When I was up there around November, and March I could hear the car's transmissions but not anything past the first 2 seconds of dispatch's. Is thats what everyone else is hearing?
