Smh... about 2 months late on that story; and I only know of one county (Huntington) that went encrypted specifically citing that new law. I'll say that again: "I only know of one county that went encrypted, specifically citing that new law."

There are a few departments that are providing delayed feeds and the like to citizens, I think this might be a good compromise in spirit in the interest of transparency. As a dispatcher who owes his career to a lifelong love of radio I have mixed feelings. I get calls every day from people asking questions about things that they "heard on the scanner" and even people trying to "correct the record". It's just become insane at times. There is no filter on people anymore. I'll be glad when we finally go encrypted, and at the same time a little sad.

I'll say what I have before. The time to fight this feature creep of encryption was on 9/12/2001. There were a few good tries, an Open Communications group on yahoo and a few others. But most of the hobbyists didn't put up much of a fight, as their agencies weren't the ones encrypting. Thus divided, the hobbyists fell.

I do think the public should be able to listen in and hold their public servants to account, but I definitely can see the issue from both sides.

I don't know why you replied to me. None of what you said is relevant to what I said. I'll say it for a 3rd time, because I knew irrelevant comments were going to happen: I only know of one county that went encrypted, specifically citing this new law as the reason.

Yeah I probably shouldn't have quoted. Just adding my $.02 to the issue. It wasn't personal, just more of an endorsement of what you said I guess.

I just don't want this to turn into yet another thread about encryption as a whole, when the subject matter is essentially about the new law; and from what I can tell, the new law has widely been a non-issue for hobbyists.

Yes we know this Tues 9/5/23 on Fox 59 at 10PM. Set your VCR'S. I knew about this story before it was posted from inside Fox 59.
If anyone misses the 10 PM story, it will also be broadcast on CBS4Indy at 11 PM.

In regards to citing the new Indiana law as a reason for full encryption, the Hamilton County 911 director did so.

Sounds like issues with IMPD and ISP not being able to hear or respond to calls involving Hamilton County. Yes, they have mutual aid channels but do you have time to change radio banks/channels when in a pursuit or running hot?

Your name is 'Dispatch', have you ever did a ride-along? I presume you've never drove, or rode, with lights and sirens on. To answer your question; yes, you do have time.

I worked the road (law enforcement) for 23 years (Old Redkey District) and then worked dispatch after going on medical. I also did a brief stent in the jail. I personally found it difficult to look down at my radio bank while going 100+ miles per hour...but that's just me.

Plus it's a good thing to be able to monitor what's going on in adjacent counties, even if their LE is not talking directly to you!

Story was mostly against encryption. Local officials arguments were weak.
I was monitoring JoCo Safe-T Last year, when the Greenwood Park Mall shooting started. I texted my some of my friends about it. Turns out one of my best friends and his entire family (12 people) were at Dave & Busters at that moment. They were able to get-up-and-get out immediately. Without the Hero Samaritan & with encryption, there could've been a deadly delay for them, for sure.

with the new system...Dispatchers can patch their TG to one of the MA talkgroups and boom, everyone is hearing everything live again, for that incident! "Hamiton Co to ISP Indianapolis, we have a pursit I 65 Northbound, we are patched to J-MA2 if your officers could assist"

Yep. Allen county patches their P25 system to SAFE-T several times per year. It doesn't appear to be difficult. The Allen county dispatchers can establish and disconnect the patch within seconds.
