If anyone misses the 10 PM story, it will also be broadcast on CBS4Indy at 11 PM.

In regards to citing the new Indiana law as a reason for full encryption, the Hamilton County 911 director did so.

This was nothing but a power grab by the 911 Director. What a moron. I don't believe that in all of my 20+ years of listening to LE radio, I have ever heard a SSN given over the air. Plenty of DLNs, DOB, etc, but I can't recall a SSN.

Many years ago, when Marion County Sheriff was still using VHF repeaters, I heard a scenario in which a deputy had apprehended a juvenile who did not have a drivers license. The deputy wanted to have his dispatcher verify the individual's identity, but all he had on the apphrendee was was a name, physical description, and Social Security number.

So, the deputy asked the dispatcher to turn off the repeater. The radio system was set up so that the dispatchers could listen to the input of the repeater. With the repeater temporarily turned off, the only people who could hear deputy give the juvenile's SSN were the dispatcher and others who happened to be close enough to hear the deputy's handheld radio.

In many years of scanning Marion County law enforcement, that's the only time I heard an SSN on the air.

If you haven't heard a SSN OTA it's not because they're not being ran, it's because you haven't heard it. If you haven't ever heard one ran, or haven't heard one in the past 20 years, it's because you're a terrible listener, or you're listening to the wrong channels. Hell, I heard Grant Co run a soc last month, after the law was in effect. It's an issue, whether you hear it or not.

If we change the topic of this conversation from "SSN/radio encryption" to "cocaine", and then read all of these comments again, it would good something like this:

'I don't have a cocaine problem. I've never had a cocaine problem. I haven't hadn't a cocaine problem in 20 years.'

Just because you haven't had a cocaine problem, or heard a SSN OTA, doesn't mean that it isn't a problem in Podunk,IN, and that there shouldn't be a law against it to protect all Hoosiers traveling through Podunk, IN and every other backwoods podunk town.
