Is there any Free Programs that anyone knows of or Reporting solutions that my spotter crew can use? We have a budget of about $0 so even if we can get the programs and wright a review we are more then happy to.

WELL considering this is the severe weather section I don't think they're asking about anything else. And to think we spent millions on education!

Just something that can be updated. like when the spotters are out they can select there location and others could see it. We have live cams that we use so that would help the "dispatcher" know where we are. We dont have a GPS but do have Internet most of the time. And for the programs, just weather programs that we can see radar and upcoming watches and warnings.

If you are an amateur radio operator, you could use APRS to make your location known to other users on a nearly continuous basis. There are APRS client applications that would then allow your "dispatcher" to see the locations of your people in relation to a weather radar display.

In order to register with SpotterNetwork, you have to take an online test of your severe weather knowledge. That test is more rigorous than any test my local NWS office gives (which is none).

That doesn't really mean anything...

Have you looked at some of the reports that come from SN?

One thing that I've learned as my time here at Radioreference.com as a moderator is that the internet brings out all sorts of weird in some people. Not all of them, but some. The quiz for SN is a nice attempt at filtering out some un-qualified people, but some slip thru the cracks.

The best way to ensure that all members are valid, sane, and qualified to report on the subject they're reporting would be to moderate their first few reports.... something that isn't exactly conducive to SN's mission... And even THEN many slip thru the cracks.

The ONLY way to verify that everybody knows what they're doing is that you would have to be vetted by a current member... again, not really conducive to what they're trying to accomplish...

So i guess my point is that if you attend a spotter training class, and speak with the Meteorologist, complete all of their requirements, then use more personal methods of reporting, it is taken a but more seriously than reporting things anonymously over the internet via a program that uses an automated approval process and the NWS has little control over who is using.

I'm not saying they will completely disregard all SN reports, I guess what I'm saying is that if there is two conflicting reports, one being on the phone, and the other being on SN, I would imagine they consider both the one on the phone carries more credibility as to its accuracy

Actually they don't... First and foremost - you ALWAYS can find out who sent in a SN report. If it ends up being wrong, or outright intentionally misleading, you have the benefit of complete contact info for that person. You can't follow up on a phone report.

And second - the reports are QCed by a team of veteran spotters, NWS mets, and private-sector mets daily. If the reports are making the grade, the individual has to be retrained. If he still doesn't do it right, he's banned.

Then he's back to using the phone ;)

lol...

By phone I didnt mean, report and hang up. The last time I reported a funnel by phone, they kept me on the phone for several minutes. They like to be able to ask questions realtime.

Understood, but they still take complete faith that you are who you say you are. Trust me - there are a LOT of loonies who call who we can't get OFF the phone ;)

I'm just saying that SN is completely traceable in ways no other method is. That adds a layer of trust that you can't find elsewhere.

That is true.

Usually if you get a chance to talk to.somebody you can tell if they know what they're doing.

I was in a conference on NWSChat and a SN report came thru... local media asked about the validity of the report, and the response was something along the lines of: Its spotternetwork. We haven't talked to them, and don't know who they are... take it for what it is.

That was early last year at some point.

Actually the biggest issue last year came from Little Rock when someone called the NWS saying he was watching a McDonalds get destroyed from a tornado... Things got hopping in a hurry and that news spread across the country.

All false.
