Hey guys, besides moving to new frequencies they could be doing one of two things:

1.) Operating full duplex like the CHP does - With dispatch only on the repeater output freq and mobile units on the input (which is not being repeated).

-OR-

2.) Operating half-duplex on the output frequencies. The radio towers used by these channels are high up (in the sierra foothills) so you can hear dispatch being transmitted out of them, but the mobile units are too far away to hear. However, because the towers are at a higher altitude they have line of sight with the mobiles so dispatch can hear them. If this were the case, you would be able to hear the full conversation with a mobile unit on the output when you were nearby (within a mile or so) but only dispatch the rest of the time when the mobiles were too far away. Doesn't this match the earlier description of what seems to be going on? :)

If that was the case wouldn't there be a note about it in the comm plan? I'm not experienced at all with systems like CHP's. Could you take a look at the link posted earlier in the thread and see what you can decipher?

Thanks
Conner

I see what he is saying about a duplex system, however, only some of the units have this problem. On several occasions I have heard full conversations with no problem. Instead of driving everyone crazy, I think Ill just call EMS communications tomorrow and ask them. Technically we use the radio at work to listen for incoming traffic, so it would be a legitimate call and not just fishing for something that doesnt belong to me :)

Also, those units I heard could not have been in duplex mode because one time one the units was in Avenal and I was in Visalia. That is probably at least 100 miles if not pretty close to it.

It sounds like you are listening to Med 15 which covers Kings County. The problem freqs. are Med 11/12 which covers Fresno metro and rural areas.
