Good evening all. I have an FT5D that I love. Recently I went in to change one of my CAM groups. When I touch the CAM selection, the whole radio freezes. Nothing works. I have a to remove the battery to get operational again. Does anyone have any suggestions? I would be super grateful.

My FT2 did this several times when the install micro-SD card was failing as it likes to talk to the card at startup time...removing the card returned it to normal behaviour and replacing with a nice new card prevented it happening again.

Thank you for the suggestions. I have removed the SD card, and it still freezes when I select the CAM option in the menu. I even tried to reformat the card, no good.

I would perform a factory reset. Don't copy back your programming just yet. Test the CAM option (not familiar with this HT). Check for firmware updates. Add a little programming if necessary to test, just not the original programming.

I am trying to do a firmware update, but I can't find the proper driver. I may have to buy the OEM programming cable.

I could be wrong but I *think* firmware updates are done with a standard mini-USB cable. It certainly is on my FT2d and I’m 99% sure the FT5d is the same…the update instructions appear pretty much the same for both sets.

The driver is installed from the update packages, as per the update instructions on Yaesu’s website.

My PC won't recognize the device when I plug it in with a standard USB to mini USB. I have tried installing the recommended .NET and USB drivers, still no luck.

I recently updated the firmware on an FT2D using the cable that came with my FT5D, so, yes, the cables are the same. There is still a driver to be installed, but it is necessary so the computer will see the radio when it is put in bootloader mode. The driver, even if installed, will not show in the device manager dialog until the radio is in bootloader mode.

Are you following the instructions from the Yaesu website? If you follow the steps exactly as laid out, you should be fine.

Go to the FILES tab and scroll to the bottom of the page.

There is a dance to do to get the unit in the required configuration so it appears via USB in the correct way. You have to slide the little switch in the DATA port UP and power the radio from the mains PSU. Do not switch the radio on, the power for the subsystems comes via the cable from the PC. Then you should be able to follow the process in the document.

Alrighty... I fixed it. No firmware upgrades. No mess. I exported my channels to a .csv file. Factory reset the radio.
(Thank you Hit_Factor). Saved a new BACKUP.dat and then imported my channels back in. Done. It had to be an error in the CAM groups. Now it is fine. THANK YOU to all who posted here and tried to help. What a community!

Good evening, today, 25/08/2025, I had a general freezing problem—absolutely everything—with my FT-5DR, USA version.

After removing the battery a few times and nothing worked, I used the original yellow cable from RT SYSTEMS to transfer the backup file I made after updating the firmware, and it solved the problem.

I'll be using my SD card. I don't know if it was the problem, but I'll keep an eye on it.

My problem occurred when I connected the power supply cable to the original plug on the side of the device. It restarted, followed by a general freezing problem.

Regarding the driver for the update: I had a bit of a struggle with this driver. I managed to resolve the update by performing a CORE ISOLATION (disable it) in WINDOWS 11, allowing the installation of the driver suggested by Yaesu (Yaesu.com).

With this, Windows allowed the driver installation, and I was able to perform the update.

I hope your freezing problem has been resolved.

I hope this helps.
Greetings.
Marcus
