Hello all,

I've been trying to configure my FT991a for FT8 but cant seem to get it to talk to my laptop. I keep getting a configuration error. I'm using a macbook running bootcamp windows 10. Not sure if that is where the problem lies?

Yes I have the drivers installed. I've been using RT Systems software without any issues so I know the driver is working. I used that guide for the initial setup but it's not working. I also tried a few other peoples ideas from videos and still nothing. I've decided to use my sons old PC with a fresh Win 10 install and see if that's the issue. The ports in Bootcamp are all screwy so I think that's what's going on. I was hoping somebody else has used Bootcamp and figured it out.

Thanks for the reply.

There is not a version of WSJT-X that run on your Mac OS system? I know there are a couple version made for Mac.

Yes there is a mac version but I'm not a fan of the Mac software but I do love thier hardware. I've also read that the drivers are not compatible with the new Mac OS they just released.

It looks like I was finally able to get the two devices to talk without any errors but no data showing up yet. Probably quiet on 10 meters as that's all I have access to currently.

10m is hit an miss for sure at moment. You should be able to hear and decode some signals on some of the other bands. That will at least let you know you have Rx side of things setup. 7.047,10.136,14.074,18.100,21.074.

20m during the day been overflowing with FT8,17 not been to bad and around 2100 utc been nice openings to Japan a few evenings here. 30/40m chocked full. Right now 10am here 30-50 stations on 20m in a 15 second cycle.

Great idea! I’m receiving on 20 meters so it’s working. Thanks! Do you know how to increase the db? It seems kinda low (20db) and the videos I’ve watched they are around 50db. They’ve showed adjusting the mic volume up but that does nothing on mine.

Not sure on a Mac. I know on Windows you can adjust the input gain of the line In or microphone input level.

The details are in the online manual that nobody reads (but probably should). WSJT-X 2.3 User Guide (princeton.edu)

In the lower left side of the main page just under the band selection is the receive audio levels (manual section "10.2 Left" but start with "5. Transceiver Setup" - "Receiver Noise Level"). While this is read-only in the software it can easily be controlled in several ways. First (and least easy) is using your computer's audio controls to increase/decrease the input level - typically "Microphone (USB Audio CODEC ). The easier way is to use the 991's RF Gain control (center knob on the right). Typically the good levels are between 40 and 60. Too low you may not get enough signal, too high and you'll overload the input and cause distortion (bands of dotted lines across the waterfall).

For the transmit audio levels (aka ALC on the 991) there are also several ways to control this level. First (and least easy) is using your computer's audio controls to increase/decrease the output level - typically "Speakers (USB Audio CODEC ). Next is to use the 991's DT Gain setting (generally this should be fairly low, not the default 50 or so - mine is set to 20). This should be set to allow you to provide enough room to increase or decrease the ALC using the software's Pwr control (manual section 5. Transceiver Setup - Transmitter Audio Level). Adjusting the Pwr control should change your ALC level on the 991, which in turn changes the transmitter's power output. You want it set about mid way in the blue area of the meter or just high enough that the transmitter power stops increasing. Like the receive audio, too low you won't be heard and too high you won't be copied due to distortion.

Please note that both controls have multiple ways to change settings. It's important that you adjust ALL but think of it as "First" being the rough control (just enough so the later ones change things), with "Next" being the fine control. For the transmit audio levels, the Pwr control is the main "fine" control. Be aware that these "fine" controls may change due to band conditions and especially the Pwr control may be set just fine on one band (or at one time on a band) but be so low that no transmit audio is being sent when you change band or a bit later on the same band that worked fine just a few mins earlier.

I thought I would try again to see if I can resolve my issue. I can transmit and receive but am unable to get a response. I thought it may be that 10 meter is just too quiet so I gat a 6 meter antenna which improved the signals I was getting but I have tried to contact multiple contacts but never get a response to start the automated sequence. Any ideas?

It could be several things but the first thing is to try to get a response from those that have the strongest single on your screen. Those that you can hear the strongest may hear you the best (but not always). Also check your ALC level. It may be too high (and distorting your audio so they can't decode your transmissions) or too low (so you're not strong enough on their end to decode you).

Yes, 10 meters is really up and down right now. You can get times where you get many signals and even some DX while other times there's little out there at all. Good luck!

How do you adjust the ALC? As far as I can tell it's not registering when I transmit.IMG_4794.jpg

Ok, finally figured out what was going on. Somehow the speaker output was muted which meant no power output. As soon as I got it adjusted I got a hit. Thanks for the help!
