• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I think I may have received a bad battery with my pager. The unit will not power on now but when connected to the charger the charging red light comes on. If I disconnect the charging cable the light still stays on. I also have had issues with the screen going fuzzy and cutting off. I am assuming that is a voltage problem with the battery. I have ordered a new battery from Unication to test this theory. Anyone else have this issue with a G4?

The biggest issue I have had with G4 batteries has been swelling. Have you pulled the battery out of the pager?

yes the battery was pulled out and placed back in. All i get is the red charging or charging full light to come on. The pager wont boot from there. I have had intermittent issues with the screen also so i was thinking that the battery is bad and won't hold a charge and the screen issues were caused by voltage problems. When being charged I get no futher indicator that the charger is working. Anything is possible even a bad charging programming cable but It all worked out of the box yesterday when i charged it up at least 5 hours and turned it on and now nothing.

Contact your vendor for an exchange.
I agree. In the meantime, I would re-pull the battery again and leave it out for a few minutes before replacing it. Sounds like you've probably done everything you can.

I sold my G5 a year or so ago, but I have that this exact problem more than once. The first time I RMA'ed the unit, the second time I purchased a new battery and it seemed to fix the issue. Both times this happened I ran the battery down to nothing. For whatever reason, the pager seems to have a hard time dealing with a completely dead battery.

Yes purchased direct from unication. They are shipping me a new unit. Seem to be great people to deal with. It may very well be an Issue with the software not being able to deal with battery regulation.

Have you tried to leave it plugged in for a few hours and see what happens.
When the battery reaches a critical low voltage it will slow charge to get the voltage up. Once its up high enough a rapid charge will begin.

Made the mistake of leaving one in my office over a weekend. Came back to a totally dead G4.
Plugged it in and nothing. But i have a USB dongle that shows voltage and current and i saw it was pulsing between 10 and 25 mAh for a while then slowly built up over an hour or so. Unit came back to life after some time.

were you using the supplied cable and charger?
have you tried a different cable and / or different power source?
Any micro usb cable wil work and any 1 amp or larger usb charger supply will work.

I have had the same issue w/ my G5 when I left the unit on & completely ran the battery down. The red light comes on & have to charge the unit turned off for a least an hour before being able to turn on & have it function properly while on charge.

This behavior is not uncommon for Lithium-ion batteries. I saw this many times over the years while selling cell phones and related accessories at the Shack. If the battery was completely discharged, even placing the phone on the charger would not initially allow me to power the phone on. The takeaway is to never let the battery discharge to zero.

While we are on the subject of batteries a quick question... Can anyone advise if the length of time required to charge the battery is the same whether you use a drop in charger or the cord and plug?

I wouldn't think there would be any difference as you're using the original charging cable/power adaptor.

LI-Ion batteries do not like excessive heat or extreme low voltage.
They have voltage protection circuits built in that if the battery gets below a certain voltage it will register as dead. most of the time it can be recovered. However if the voltage gets to low it will not. So if you happen to let a device run dead it should still be protected. Keep in mind that a dead battery in a device typically means its below the low voltage threshold to run the device but still has enough voltage to allow it to be charged. If that dead battery is not charged soon the self discharge will make the voltage to low to recover.
