If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Looking to buy a Unication G5 pager/scanner for mainly WISCOM and misc local (20 miles of 53503) stuff. Anyone have experience with unication g5? I’m hoping to be able to use it now for phase 1 / VHF and later for phase 2 / 800 mhz. There is a model that does both. Also have it act as a pager for local fire ems.

Or for this area should I get a SDS100? I just prefer the small size of the G5.

Thanks

You can purchase a g5 with various other bands. Go to one of the dealer websites and start an order to see all the options.

A G5 will not monitor both vhf and uhf at the same time. However, it's a simple twist of a button to change systems.

Need more details on the local fire pager. If the band matches up with the primary and secondary frequency ranges it will be ok.

What city, county?

As @Hit_Factor mentioned, it's important to understand the G5's limitations vs a true hobby scanner. That being said, I have 2 G5s and a G4 I am waiting to return from Unication (toggle switch problem) and can't imagine using anything else after trying other scanners/methods for monitoring my local systems here for fire and LEO. I still use a OLD scanner for some VHF analog stuff and have a BCD 536 I occasionally turn on with things get too nuts at home here.

Keep in mind, on the G5 (which I own and love) you can only listen to one system/site at a time with upto 64 TGs (or 63 plus wildcard), or up to 16 conventional frequencies in a slow scan. If you want to listen to multiple frequencies and systems at the same time, then the SDS100 is a better choice. A G5 is not designed as a scanner, though you can use it that way, or for the scanning community, it was designed for professional agencies who don't have the same scanning needs.

Both the G5 and SDS100 are very good, it is just a question of what you want to listen to, a specific agency or everything around you.
