I am looking to get started with UID's on my BCD996P2. I use Freescan to record my scanner and have noticed that the "Unit ID" section has always been blank. I am pretty much starting from scratch. I understand what UID's are but I'm not sure how they work. Would I assign them manually or is there software that would do it automatically? What software/receivers would be necessary? The system I am listening to is: Montgomery County, MD (P16) Trunking System, Various, Maryland - Scanner Frequencies
Thanks,
Vilis

Basically, you have a pen and paper and write them down as they come up on the display - then manually enter them.

I'd be delighted if there was something more automated, but I don't think there is....

All info found on Radioreference is user submitted. Someone with the time and the patience would have to keep track and log the potentially thousands of unit IDs that exist on the system. Looks like someone started a wiki entry here to log unit IDs but never bothered to submit any to start with. All members should have the ability to add to the wiki so if you want to be the first to start building the list for the good of the group, have at it!

The other thing to remember, is that it/can change.

For instance: The local PD here is actually contracted with the Sheriff Dept.
So, when they rotate deputies in and out, or re-assign, their ID is no longer associated with the local PD and thus, the info I programmed is obsolete.

I thought you were a ProScan user. The UID Logging works great for that.

If you enter a UID you start with the "." Which becomes a "I" for example i1004556 , you can then use text to name it

Do you have it turned on in settings?
If you want them to show on the scanner display
On the SDS200: Put the scanner in Detail Display mode by holding a channel then press the big knob then the 9 key.
On the BCD996P2: Settings - Disp. Unit ID - On

You can display the names in the simple view of the SDS scanners by simply going into the display options and turning it on in the location you want.

I am (happy ProScan user)...

But, I still have to jot down the actual info I want to program to display with each corresponding UID (ie: Shoreline - Adam4 or Kenmore - Edward 14, etc).

I use ProScan to track every RID my radio picks up. Then I go back and listen to the recordings and determine what each RID is. It's a very time consuming (and ever changing) process but, if you want to track individual units, thats what you have to do. All part of the fun IMO.

My state seems to have some coordination with RIDs (county number is the first 2 digits of the RID) and there appear to be no overlaps so it's pretty easy to know WHERE a unit belongs but you have to drill down to know WHAT that unit is. I have a master list of RIDs for the State and local system & it's about 6000 lines long.

I also have alerts on some RIDs that don't pop up a lot (feds, some special units & air ambulances). Works perfectly with Proscan & the SDS 100/200.

Back in the day when we were tapping discriminators to track trunked system this was a VERY manual process (paper/pen/spreadsheets).

I use a free solution called ID Tracker III for this and it works great. Also logs any talkgroup that a RID was seen on, and you can also name them within the program as well.

ID Tracker works great for logging and displaying uid alias.

It displays the scanner screen on your PC too!

Great program!

I use Proscan on my SDS200.
