Found another small problem on my GRE500 that i think was mentioned by the actual first users....On my Will County ILL Edacs STD (Wide) 6 channel trunk system the 500 misses the actual start of the transmission vs the PRO96...The PRO96 on Edacs opens the squelch a fraction before the 500 missing the first word on the 500...In quick conversations back and forth the 500 misses the quick call back....The 500 squelch is set on the "edge" as the PRO96 is....I have found many excellent features on the 500 and as mentioned im sure GRE will be very intent on solving the situations as my intent is to replace some old equipment with the new PSR600 base .....

Have you tried setting the "EDACS UnMute" delay to a lower value to see if that helps?

BTW, after my "hardware issue" the radio performs better than any other so far. The digital audio quality on the Kasas P-25 system is incredible.
It definitely has a good receiver too.

I think Mancow is suggesting we all have our 500's suffer a 2 foot drop, may fix the issue for all of us;-)

Ha, if it were only that simple. ;)

I stll say the issue was present before the drop but I can never prove it. :(

Private Wildcard

Added a wildcard last night to the local TRS.
Not sure what format the ID's are displaying when transmitting.
Can these be formatted into Uniden type ID's? i.e. 7XXXXX

It seems like the Private Call IDs might be in Hex format and not Decimal from what I was seeing briefly on one Motorola system.

That's all it does, you need to hit the software thread for programming options.

If you are referring to the Remote Control Demo, you just select the COM port in the program and press START once you have the cable plugged into the radio (no need to press anything on the radio). As Rob noted, if you are looking for programming software, check the other thread. There are two PC programs available so far.

-- One is the "FlexStep" option I'm using. It seems that some voice transmissions and some control channels that fall outside the "native" fixed frequency step when using this option, don't quite receive reliably. For example: one control channel's true frequency is 156.1375. With FlexStep Off, that rounds to 156.135. When I go to analyze that CC, it always shows good reception/decoding and you can hear the CC data audio. With FlexStep On, the frequency shows the correct step of 156.1375. However, when I go to analyze, it's hit or miss if I get a reliable decode rate and most of the time I get no data audio coming through the speaker. When I go to tune and punch in 156.1375, it's also hit or miss if it shows reliable data BUT when I step the frequency down two steps to the "native" 156.135 of the radio, it's starts showing good decode rates and audio again. SuperTrack On or Off doesn't seem to make a difference in this.

Just an update and confirmation on this:

The PSR-500 definitely doesn't seem to like some of the frequency steps that Flexstep is tuning to. It's not decoding properly for several frequencies on our system when it's on. It changes the displayed frequency to the proper step used in our system (12.5kHz) but the radio itself seems to be having trouble "tuning" the step or something. I noticed that those same channels if you tune the frequency the same amount of steps *below* the native frequency, it still seems to capture the transmission just fine.

Example:

155.6825 - Good audio
155.6850 - Good audio
155.6875 - Bad to no audio

155.6075 - Good audio
155.6100 - Good audio
155.6125 - Bad to no audio

In the Pro-96 seems to be the opposite, it still captures the transmissions in the steps *above* the native frequency but not below. So maybe it's a hardware design/limitation thing. Or there might be a possibility to tweak something. For now, it works fine with Flexstep off and the PSR-500 displaying the frequencies to the closest native step, just like in the Pro-96. :(

Oh well, I can live with it for now, it's just that it would be nice to see the proper frequency displayed like in the Unidens.

Discriminator Output ?

Hello:

Does the 500 have a true discriminator out tap ?

Would love to use it to run the Shipplotter software, which apparently requires a discriminator tap (non audio, etc. filtered) output of the AIS ship position frequencies.

I didn't think the 500 had one, but saw a suggestion that perhaps it did ?

Thanks,
Bob

how many ch.'s this scanner has ?
It doesn't really have "channels". It has "objects": conventional frequencies, talkgroups, trunking systems, searches, etc.

It has 1852 "blocks" in its main memory. Each of the above "objects" takes anywhere from 1 (conventional frequencies and talkgroups) to 10 (the biggest trunking systems) blocks.

How many "objects" you can store depends on what you're storing. You could store 1852 conventional frequencies, or 1 EDACS trunking system and 1848 talkgroups, or 50 Motorola trunking systems each with 27 talkgroups, etc.

Also, there are 21 "V-Scanner" folders, each of which contains a full copy of the scanner's working memory.

No, the output is not baseband (discriminator) audio only.

I am sure someone will figure out, as with previous radios, where to find the tap on the PCB if it is really needed. However this radio has a ASCII data dump of the control channel and weather SAME data build in. You use the included USB cable and connect it to your PC. That will satisfy most needs. What kind of data are you looking for? The manual is posted on the GRE America web site and you can check what is output. I am sure other here can answer if you have specific questions that the manual can not answer.
