I'm new to SWL, and I recently acquired this Grundig from a HAM veteran in my city. Unfortunately, I didn't check a whole lot when I picked up the radio, other than running through some local FM stations to check possible audio distortions, and trusted the seller since he was an old dude who spoke nicely and had a bunch of professional radios in his collection. I got it home, put in some new D-size batteries, and fired it up. Every time I toggle AM Sync on, the radio starts squealing continuously like it can't hold the sync lock. There's a different tone in USB; the loud noise is from the LSB sync. Happens on all stations and wavelengths.
Using the whip antenna indoors.
To make sure it wasn't a weak signal causing this, I checked the same frequencies on my Sony ICF-7600GR and an Eton E1 side-by-side, and both radios hold sync way better than the Grundig.
Is this a sign that something needs fixing in the radio, or is there something I'm doing wrong?
There is nobody I can trust with fixing this radio in my city, and I might have to do it myself. I'm good at carrying out electronics repair activities, but I do not know much about diagnosing the problem and identifying the root cause. I'm hoping it's likely a case of bad capacitors.
