I was Pawn Shop Hopping today and I came across a Uniden HH979 Marine Radio, it was laying in a pile of wires and odds and ends and stuff, waiting to be thrown away, I asked as sales clerk how much it was and he said "throw some numbers at me" and I said ill give you .....5 BUCKS!!!...........HE TOOK IT

At first i thought it mign be junk, mainly i bought it for the antenna on it.... its a nice
multi-use scanner antenna (by the looks of it)

Well I pluged it into 12volt and sure enough it fired right up and it evens transmitts I tested it with my scanner. Does anyone Know if they are used on land? If not it will be useful when I plan my trip to the Ocean, I live In oklahoma so I will be a big VACATION

Just goes to show that pawn shops arent always bad

I agree with that......I have bought guns at GREAT DEALS from pawn shops................also have found from time to time deals on scanners , all depends if you can "haggle" with them or not and of course you might want to make sure it's a little on the "warm" side.

No. They are not used on land, with exceptions related to the marine industry. And I would hope you have no intention of transmitting with it. There's already a thread on that subject, I hope we don't need to repeat it.

Unless you have a boat, you can't use it on your trip to the ocean, either. Not to transmit.

Thrift stores are great, too. So far, we've gotten a spectrum analyzer, a signal generator, and a number of antique radios from thrift stores. Pawn shops are usually too pricey.
