I'm going to take the HAM tech test tomorrow night. Hope I'm ready. Haven't studied like I should, a father with three small boys can be distracting. Wish me luck!

It was pretty easy. I browsed through the book and read over the questions a few times and passed.

Good luck and sure you will do fine!
Now you just have to get the kids interested down the road!

You can do it!

From a father of three young boys himself and an Extra class ham and VE.

You can take some practice tests here:

QRZ Ham Radio

These tests use the same question pool as the real test. Run through the Technician test a few times (the questions will be different every time) and if you consistently pass you should be good to go for the real test.

As others have said, it's pretty easy. I only missed one question when I took mine. They gave me the General test to try just for kicks...I only missed passing that one by 2 questions, and I had never even looked at any of the information for General class.

What's the difference between a regular ham test and the tech test?

The tech test is the starting license that gets you on v/uhf and a little hf. The next test is the general and that gives you privileges on all of the hf bands but not all freqs. The next test is the extra test which gives you privileges on all amateur freqs.

I passed! Now I need equipment. Thanks to everyone for the encouragement.

Congrats David! If you feel comfortable feel free to share your call when you get it!
Congrats and welcome to the Ham Radio Family!
Happy Monitoring (and QSO'ing)!

Uh oh, here comes the "advice" on which 2M CB to buy... look out! May I remind you there is MUCH more to the bands above 30MHz than old farts on repeaters? MY advice is to save your pennies and get an all band all mode rig, the best action is OFF the repeaters and FM, CW and SSB (plus digital except for AX25 packet) are horizontally polarized so an FM only rig and a "stick" will leave you crippled. Oh BTW an HT having short range is the worst starter rig, save that idea for later.

Having HF (and all band receive) at your fingertips will lead you to erecting one or more HF antennas and listening around the bands so you'll know what you're getting into when you upgrade your license. You'll need an HF rig eventually so why not start with one? No point wasting money when for A Few Dollars More (Clint Eastwood?) you can have an all in one wonder box and not having your first investment lying around gathering dust. Oh did I mention there are highly compact rigs that also make great mobiles and portables?

I'll not make recommendations, do your homework and select the rig that best suits your needs. Many retail outlets have demos you can operate although you need the appropriate license to transmit but in any case it's nice to get the feel of the rig before you buy it. Always remember someone else's opinion may not be yours.

I hate to admit it, but I agree with Warren. While you are in study mode, start on the general test. A dual band mobile or one of the high end multiband handhelds will cost you almost as much as one of the HF/VHF/UHF mobile/base units. The v/uhf repeater scene is cool if you have buddies that you just want to BS with but HF is real ham radio.

No no no! Real ham radio starts above 1000 MHz, and is horizontally polarized.
