Congratulations. Are you looking to operate from home or mobile?
I'm not sure yet. I have a detached garage (Mancave), so I'm thinking home rig. But I'll see which setup offers the most versistility.

Uh oh, here comes the "advice" on which 2M CB to buy... look out! May I remind you there is MUCH more to the bands above 30MHz than old farts on repeaters? MY advice is to save your pennies and get an all band all mode rig, the best action is OFF the repeaters and FM, CW and SSB (plus digital except for AX25 packet) are horizontally polarized so an FM only rig and a "stick" will leave you crippled. Oh BTW an HT having short range is the worst starter rig, save that idea for later.
Having HF (and all band receive) at your fingertips will lead you to erecting one or more HF antennas and listening around the bands so you'll know what you're getting into when you upgrade your license. You'll need an HF rig eventually so why not start with one? No point wasting money when for A Few Dollars More (Clint Eastwood?) you can have an all in one wonder box and not having your first investment lying around gathering dust. Oh did I mention there are highly compact rigs that also make great mobiles and portables?
I'll not make recommendations, do your homework and select the rig that best suits your needs. Many retail outlets have demos you can operate although you need the appropriate license to transmit but in any case it's nice to get the feel of the rig before you buy it. Always remember someone else's opinion may not be yours.
Real hams use CW!
So your suggesting because there's no morse code requirement on current tech liscensing anyone who recieves one now isn't a "Real Ham"?
hmm still waiting for my call sign, does anyone know how long I can expect to wait?

I passed! Now I need equipment. Thanks to everyone for the encouragement.
Congratulations!!! Just promise us one thing... promise that you wont load up your car with a bunch of amber strobes, dash blasters and dual talons and go chasing after rain saying that you're part of some elite government radio group that protects and serves in the time of mass destruction.
But seriously, welcome to the club!
Aw, come on now! That's half the fun! LOL! I saw this one car at the local hamfest in November. It was an old Ford Escort station wagon. That feller had no less than 5 mag mount antennas, stuck right in the middle part of the roof, in a circular pattern. I went to see what kind of radios he had connected to all that coax coming into his passenger side window, and there wasn't a single radio in the car!!! LOL!
...Or just don't be a poser, that works well too. Congrats again.
