They could be ISSI linked and share TG on all the systems, to the user it would all be on the same radio and invisible to them
Someone with no knowledge how it all works could assume that they are all on the same "network"
There’s no ISSI. They all have each others systems in their radios. Take it from the guys that run DSD and have been listening to the systems for 10 + years

my sisters roommate is a dispatch for hampton/NNPD and my brother is litterlay a cop for NN.
No offense, but that doesn't mean they are accurate sources of information on the radio infrastructure. It wouldn't be the first time somebody using a radio in their job was told something about their radio system that wasn't correct.

Lets just say federal frequencies are for four letter groups: NASA Navy USAF USMC Army USCG. All have a presence in HR. The cities, shipyards, schools, etc are absolutely not allowed on those freqs. For one, their equipment wont go there. Certain people get issued mil gear that will rx/tx into those systems. You can count those radios on one hand.

Not saying all police think this way, but I’ve heard from some police they don’t know the difference of P25 VS Encrypted. I’ve heard some say “ Oh we’re digital, so you can’t hear us at all” and had to tell them the difference. I’m leaning towards the conversation that was said went something like this

They may have a talkgroup for mutual aid, but Hampton, Langley-NASA, Newport News, and York County are all on their own systems. York/Poquoson have their own site on a system they share with Isle of Wight, Suffolk, and Gloucester.

I made an updated list of confirmed encrypted agencies in va, if anyone has any more lmk and I'll add it. I'll add Newport News to it, I heard Lee County might be encrypted but the DB says no, if anyone is in that area or knows for sure lmk. The most common algorithm I'm finding so far is P25 ADP or NXDN scrambling, typically only the special operations radios have AES crypto boards installed, but it depends on the radio shop
On your list Virginia Beach PD is AES

Ahhh, the ORION system. Yeah, thank Hampton Roads Planning District Commission for that. It is "Separate Systems" maintained by each city / town / group (some like York have joined together) but I believe the License is Virginia Beach's. I could ask about that. Details are here: Overlay Regional InterOperability Network (ORION) Trunking System, Various, Virginia
I dont know how up-to-date that is. But it is the details. There is a bunch of other stuff that is Co-Located with ORION for emergency coordination between all of Southeast Virginia. Here are some old slides for it all. https://www.hrpdcva.gov/DocumentCen...operability-System---Follow-Up-Discussion-PDF

Yeah, they use it for interoperability communications but yes VB is the core/ license of the system.

Before I spend money on a scanner to upload to Broadcastify, has Portsmouth FD gone encrypted or did the person who maintained the feed quit?

Portsmouth FD hasn’t gone encrypted yet but I was talking to someone last month that runs a system in the area and they said they were considering it because of the feed that was up. So guess he took the feed down so they wouldn’t.

Encrypting fire because of a Broadcastify feed has got to be the silliest reason.

Yea I don’t know not up there much but I have heard that a lot he even told me New Kent County went that way for that reason. All I have heard is patient privacy. I was going to make a feed down here in Manteo NC years ago but they said the same thing and someone put the feed up already. I won’t do just so there is no reason just don’t want to that risk.

I do remember something like if they go encrypted and need mutual aid assistance then they would switch to orion for structural fires and medical calls where mutual is needed. I am in my 60’s so memory is not like it used to be.

Yeah, that definitely sounds like New Kent. They’ve continued to make some interesting choices lately, like rolling out multiple brand new command vehicles every few months while companies are still running two people to an engine.

Yes seem all of Hampton Roads FD/ems will be encrypted and I feel like my hometown will do the same.
