Undated photo of Amateurs in Sun City, AZ. The club no longer exists.

In Arizona, most everyone has a firearm and some still wear them around.

I remember walking into the Phoenix HRO many years ago and noticing the holstered 1911 on one of the customers.

Of course, on my way there, I had witnessed a street fight a few blocks away. I think Phoenix has always been kind of a tough town.

My memory of Phoenix when I worked there the summer of 2016 is Fry’s is a grocery store there. I thought how cool, Fry’s electronics stores are everywhere in this town. Little did I know.

Where I was in Oregon, no one batted an eye, usually it was a convo starter.

On the otherhand, I got questioned all the time about my belt mounted HT.

"What a, whatcha gonna do with that radeeaah?" Or..."Are you the cops?"

PS, I can't see the pic in OP. Just a filename.

Fry's Electronics and Fry's Grocery Stores were orihinally owned by two brothers. Frys Electronics is no longer in business and the Grocery Stores were bought out by Kroger, I believe a few decades ago. I don't know if Frys Electronics was ever in Arizona and if they were that was before my time which I moved to Arizona in 2019. I believe Frys Electronics was based in San Jose and the Roseville Fry's Electronics store in Roseville closed several years before I moved to Arizona. The Frys Electronics chain was predominantly in California and the Grocery Stores were predominantly in Arizona.

I believe that Call Sign is still in existence today for the Amateur Repeater that is located on the Banner Del Webb Hospital in Sun City West. When I am cruising with my HAM friend in his car, I hear that callsign every 15 minutes. My friend told me there are 20+ Amateur Repeaters on the air throughout the Phoenix Area and that repeater is the only repeater with any traffic. He said, occasionally there is a 5-10 minute roll-call and that is about it first the entire area. He also said you can tell when some people become new Amateur because they'll use the various repeaters for about a week and you never hear from them again. Essentially, all the repeaters go silent for many weeks. He also said there are 24 2 Meter repeaters in the City of Tucson that never have any traffic.

I lived in Scottsdale in the early 90s. There was a Fry's Electronics in the Scottsdale Pavillions shopping center at that time. My recollection is that because the Pavillions was, maybe still is, on reservation land, AZ sales tax wasn't collected by the stores there.

The Phoenix area had two Fry's Electronics stores - originally in Tempe at the former site of Incredible Universe near I-10, and a second location in northwest Phoenix which was built for Fry's Electronics. I think there were plans for a third store somewhere in east or northeast Phoenix, or maybe at the Pavilions, but it never materialized. Just the two locations, until the end...

The Tempe one is the location I ended up going to, after I drove to the closest “Fry’s”…only to discover it’s a grocery store.
