Well, that G5 is a pricey little beast, it better work perfectly if they expect to sell it at that price.

Just as I was getting close to convincing the CFO that a $400 scanner was worth it...............

Honestly I would stay with a BCD436HP and a BCD996P2. This is going to be the best scanner's on the market overall for the value. I have had every scanner possibly you can buy and these radios will keep you happy for the price.

The BCD536HP is a pretty good radio too. The work horse that has never had any kinds of issues is the BCD996P2. Hands down.

I'm still curious about bagdeppa's remarks regarding the G5, I am curious to know what system he was monitoring. I assumed he was referring to the new P25 system, but I don't see how that is possible considering the G5 is not capable of phase 2 yet.

May just have to say the hell with it and get one of those two. Hate not being able to listen in on anything.. Wife really saw the need when we had a couple big brush fires makai of us. No danger, but she liked listening to the FD progress and where the fire was. Not being able to do that with the new system is a convincing argument for more radio(s).

I lean toward the 436 for the handheld aspect. Not really one to sit and listen these days. Still not clear if you can plug it into shore power for desktop use, or have to run on batteries for all listening.

The 436 can be powered with the USB cable, either plugged into a computer or with a charging block. If you have a spare iPhone charging block or similar, I found that works.

Well, snagged a 536 instead off of Amazon Warehouse deals, for $332. Not portable, but if it works will get me going again. If it is useless, I can return it, unlike fleabay gambles.

The only downfall of the BCD436HP is you cannot listen to the radio and charge it at the same time. It's only one or the other.

Hi I just ordered the bcd 436 yesterday really looking forward to receiving it. I have too admit I am so used to the older scanners that I am just hoping I am not to overwhelmed. Prior to placing the order I got the Easier to read Manual for it. Omg the learning curve for me is going to be interesting. Did it take you long to figure it all out.?

I assume some googling will get you through it eventually but I'm totally new to this. I'm considering picking up the same model to replace my dads bc125at that he keeps telling me doesn't work anymore. After reading through this thread about phase ll and what not it worries me I might not be able to help him out. Please keep me updated with your new scanner.

BCD325P2

Received from Scanner Master last week, pre-programmed. The talk is much clearer than analog but there doesn't seem to be as much of it with digital.

Anyone notice the fire talkgroups have changed? 6502 appears to now be county-wide dispatch.

I'm seeing that also, but I occasionally still see 6505 being used for dispatch. Then again, it seems like each call is patched in some manner based on what I'm seeing in Pro96Com (6502 --> 6505 in some cases).

There seems to be no rhyme or reason to it, but I agree they are definitely doing something differently.

I would have no idea how to add programming to my new scanner. I'd have to find a scanner guy here on the Big Island to help me.
BCD325P2 is a nice size. Fits in my truck's cup holder. I have rechargeable batteries which helps because it goes through the (only 2) batteries in less than a day.

Well got my 536, stumbling through the steps.

Got a list with the Hawaii public safety system loaded in, and now am in the "no voice" boat. I see the transmissions and control freq with a SDR, see signal strength indications on the 536, but no action. Just loading the RR database is evidently not good enough.

If you paid for pre-programming, why should you have to mess with it?

On further reading, it seems the radio should "lock on" to control channels. Not happening, tried with attenuator on and off. Once when fiddling things, got the channel ID of 6108 monentarily which is correct for Kona PD, but no sound and then it was off the races again with "ID scanning"

I am not as stupid as my wife believes, but this radio should have been CLOSE with RR database settings. Or, are scanners all over the country being fooled that the RR database download will set things right?

This radio will not stop on a damn thing. WX channels receive just fine, so not an antenna issue. Believe me, I understand that aspect.

Have you updated the firmware to at least 1.11.20?
