jdoucette@sfd.cityofsacramento.orgDate/Time of Occurrence:August 02, 2007 - Type of Incident:AnnouncementLocation:3230 J Street, SACRAMENTOSacramento Fire Departments Haz Mat Robot
Sacramento- the Sacramento Fire Department has taken delivery of a new "Haz Mat Robot". Haz Mat personnel are currently being trained in its operation and use. The media is invited to observe this new piece of equipment in action!
The Robot will be used to provide down range monitoring of the environment to determine if radiation, volatile organic compounds, oxygen deficiency or enrichment condition are present or if the atmosphere is flammable. It also is equipped with low light and high resolution cameras that can be used for observation from a distance. It also has a voice activated speaker system which allows the robot operator to monitor sounds down range.
The Robot is track driven which allows it to climb stairs and pivot within its length. Because of its low profile and narrow body design it can be deployed into various vehicles (buses, airplanes). This body design will also allow the robot to enter some confined spaces.
We intend to use the robot in situations that will allow us to reduce the potential exposure of personnel to very dangerous conditions. The Robot was purchased with MMRS (Metropolitan Medical Response System) federal grant funds that were awarded to the Sacramento Fire Dept. in 2006.
To the best of our knowledge it is the first robot being carried by a HAZMAT team on the west coast.
