The chatter was too faint to hear what was being said though.

These EAMs you might hear on UHF are usually being sent from E-6 Mercury aircraft. Did you hear this around 11:35-11:40 by any chance ? There was an E-6 passing by to the west around that time on the 4th.

That's one of the EAM frequencies! The other one is 323.800 MHz
And as I am sure you know but others may not, the transmission on both frequencies is usually simultaneous. Not these frequencies are also use at some bases. (323.8 replaced 321.0 for these some years ago.)

I hear non-EAM traffic on 311.000 fairly frequently during any given month. It's typically pre aerial refueling coordination.

Nevermind, I see you said "last night". There was an E-6 working off the coast for almost 8 hours that night between around 7pm to 2am, maybe that is what you heard ?
The message transmitted by them often occurs right after departure.

I've only heard them on HF. Are you talking about when they log onto the net right after departure ? I've heard that on HF often.
No, talking about EAM...I suspect it is an EAM that announces they (as a command structure change) are airborne. They remote base at times out of Patuxent R. for the Atlantic.

For me, usually 311.0 is active the same time hf is on EAM's....I usually keep 311.0 on as it is also Barksdale cmd post freq for Mudbug ops. (B52's)

They also happen on FSK RTTY (along with MSK) from TACAMO on VLF (the primary TACAMO mission).

From the few times I've checked on HF after seeing an E-6 depart is that you will hear an exchange between the aircraft and the ground station confirming entry into the net before any EAMs are sent. Maybe they don't do this all the time ?

In this example recorded on 11175 kHz the E-6 callsign BOAR OAR is calling the ground station FLYBALL.

Audio E-6 entering the net on 11175

I'm guessing these "net entry" exchanges would also be simulcast on UHF but I'm not sure.
