I saw that the beginners/newbie thread was closed. So, hopefully here is as good as any place to say hello.
I have been wanting to get into this hobby for years ...Finally decided to do so.

Just started my studies a few days ago and am very exited to finally have the time to do so.
I am jumping into this hobby/art with both feet....as I always do, which includes astrophotography, music, engine building and tuning. There is a lot to digest but so far it's an enjoyable journey.
Some of my gear is already on it's way....
A Yeasu FT-991a and a good power supply,FP-1030A
I thought about starting with a 706 MKIIg. I've had my eyes on that for years, but I like what the yeasu had to offer. I know it's way more than what I need for now but just like engine building...plan ahead.
My goals for now is just getting on air and growing. I'm planning on having it as a auto/mobile unit and base unit. I'm in an HOA, so for the house I'm looking for something that can fit on my roof peaks without the HOA complaining. I do plan on using the 50Mhz and 144/430Mhz. I already have a 8ft RTK antenna mounted up there and no one has said anything yet. Transmission goals will be small at first, hitting repeaters, regional(a few hundred miles or so), and point to point. Even as an Electrical Engineer, the choices for antenna are mind boggling. This will probably be my biggest immediate hurdle.

Here we go....

Welcome to amateur radio.

BTW, it's Yaesu, not Yeasu.

I will probably be doing more lurking than posting in the intimidate future, probably in the antenna section. I am extremely new. Just now subscribed to AARL.
As an Electrical Engineer I understand the fundamentals, It's the application I need to get an understanding of for what Intend to do. That and the operation of my new, fairly complicated piece of equipment :)

Hi @Ghostnotes and welcome to Radio Reference and ham radio. The Yaesu FT-991A transceiver is a fine piece of equipment. You’ll be glad that you started with that rig so now you don’t have to upgrade the rig any time soon. This is my 50th year as a ham and my 46th year as an electrical engineer. The fun never ends and I am still learning new things. Ham radio has been a very rewarding hobby. 73, Dave K4EET
