I am trying to program my husband's Whistler 1040 scanner. I tried programming it manually, but it won't work. What software do I need and where can I download it, so I can use RadioReference to program it?
I would really appreciate a simple step by step instruction. Sorry, I just don't get all of the verb age that I have read.
Thanks,
MJ

There really isn't a simple setup with these scanners that doesn't use new terminology - however let's start with the Easier to Read manual

We have a fairly extensive FAQ for these radios here. There are videos linked at the bottom that may be of use...

Manual programming (also from the FAQ)

As for software, there are 2 packages - ARC500 (which has a wiki for the help) and PSREdit500 (which has a PDF from the Whistler site). Win500 is not recommended as the author hasn't been heard from in years...

Really, though, before we go through all this, precisely WHAT system are you trying to program?

You can use ARC500 or PSREdit500 software. Both have a free trial period to decide which one you like better. I use Butel ARC500 Basic for my Radio Shack PRO-106, the older brother of the Whistler WS1040. Both use the same software.

Llano and surrounding counties are on the Greater Austin/Travis Regional Radio System (GATRRS), which is a digital P25 Phase 2 system. The Whistler 1040 is only a Phase 1 scanner and not capable of decoding P25 Phase 2. The old VHF frequencies are still listed in the RR database but most all traffic is on GATRRS. You need a P25 Phase 2 capable scanner.

Also a lot of the bigger cities/counties on GATRRS use Simulcast (multiple towers all transmitting at the same time) which requires a scanner capable with dealing with simulcast such which are limited to the Uniden SDS100 or SDS200 scanners.

The GATRRS system is P25 Phase 2 capable. All of the talkgroups are currently Phase 1 ("D" in Mode column) which the WS1040 can receive.

There is a sticky note when you first get on this forum "How to program WS 1040/WS 1065 scanners". It gives you steps by step instructions.
