That's a fact! I even tried the "tin can" antenna I read about on one of the forums here (it didn't really help). I had access to a real LPD radio for a few hours - with my scanner in the same location. They're radio was almost non-stop, and my scanner was mostly quite. Also, they (LPD) don't have the clearest transmissions themselves. The only times my scanner did pick up something (maybe 10% of the time), the LPD radio was crystal clear.

I am in Livermore and almost exactly the same distance between two of the repeater sites Doolan and Patterson Pass. The only way I am able to hear LPD is I got a "BNC Right-Angle Plug" from Radio Shack and took the stock rubber duck antenna that came with the GRE PSR-500 and found the direction to point the antenna to hear LPD. Now my rubber duck antenna in a horizontal position pointed at Patterson Pass repeater site. The negative of doing this is that I can only hear radio traffic on ALCO East Simulcast.

Are you getting the lions share of radio traffic with your antenna setup? I did notice if I pointed my scanner antenna in certain directions, it would perform better, but not enough to really make a difference - I maybe doubled the traffic to like 20% of the time versus only about 10%. I had an LPD portable for about 4 hours and my (former) PSR-800 in the same area and basically the scanner was useless. I said 10% and that is a very generous number - probably more like 5% - if that. I use an APCO-25 system everyday at work and was only able to hear a small percentage of work traffic on the scanner versus my work radio. As GRE stated, the new system is very difficult to decode period - even worse when it goes simucast. I remember when trunking first came out. It too had problems being picked up by scanners. I'll give it a few months and GRE, or Bearcat or Uniden or whomever will come out with a scanner that works - until the next system.

EBRCS control channels
I am setting up my logging program to monitor for new TGs in CoCo sites. I notice Radio Reference lists a number of frequencies other than those marked as Control Channels. Do I need to have all the channels stored for a site or just the control channels in my Uniden 996XT?

Just the control channels.
The only caveat being that the system could switch to a frequency that RR doesn't have marked as a control channel. This is pretty rare, and hasn't happened once to me. In fact, the CoCo Central cell has been on the same single control channel forever...
Motorola trunked systems are limited to 4 control channels per site, so you only have to worry if there are less than 4 channels marked on RR (in which case it's a good idea to add all frequencies just to be safe).
It's simulcast distortion, which was discussed extensively earlier in this thread.

Just received a Uniden/Bearcat BCD-396XT. LPD is back loud and mostly clear! Now all I have to do is figure out how to lockout all the other crap pre-programmed into this scanner. Walnut Creek PD went P25 yesterday. I'll add them soon.

Oh, really? What TG? I'm not seeing it.
I will reply to myself to clarify that perhaps GP is hearing traffic from Contra Costa County Sheriff TGs and mistakenly IDing them as WCPD... which, of course, they are not.
I will edit to make sure I'm clear: Walnut Creek PD is still on 460.4250 with no patch (or other traffic) onto EBCRS CCCO Central at this time.

I realize that WCPD is listed in the DB. Currently, there is no traffic on that talk group (or any others like Concord, Martinez, etc.). An entry in the DB does not mean that "Walnut Creek PD went P25 yesterday."

What I'm saying is that, from my location, I can hear both WCPD on UHF and (as you know) EBRCS CCCO Central. There is ZERO WCPD traffic on EBRCS. Nothing. The UHF channel comes up, and nothing on EBRCS
I was simply trying to correct an erroneous statement so folks don't go thinking that WCPD is on EBRCS today - which they are not.
Geeze - I'm not trying to start a war here. I'm happy I finally got a scanner that works for me. My kid works with Walnut Creek PD and told me they started using their new radios this week. I assumed that since they were listed in the EBRCS frequency list (I do know they are going to start using P25 at some point) that they were actually using the system already.
No war.
Just want to make sure that we post accurate information, and not assumptions and speculation. A lot of folks read these forums - particularly when new systems are coming online. Misinformation, naturally, creates confusion.
