Good afternoon all.

I just picked up my WS 1040 and am very tech savvy...BUT this scanner has me scratching my head. I watched more Youtube videos than ever on something...HOW do you use the cable to program this? Any help is appreciated.

First let's start with precisely what you want to program. Go to our database (use the pulldown labeled 'RadioReferece' in the blue toolbar on the left, select 'database') and navigate to your desired system. Once folks know this, they can be of more help

However just to get you started, read this from our wiki

Keep in mind that your 1040 is a PSR-500 in a Whistler box; therefore anything written for the 500 will work for you.

I would concentrate on the Nuts and Bolts links (anything in blue is a link), the question about the Owner's Manual (which links to the Easier to Read Guide), and the very bottom of the article with links to the Scanner school

Using the cable to program the scanner requires programming software. Otherwise, you have to program the scanner manually using its menus (no cable required). Using the cable, you can also use a standalone firmware updater (programming software not required) from the Whistler downloads site to update or reload the CPU firmware in the scanner. You have 3 choices of programming software: ARC500, Win500, and PSREdit500. All have a 30 day free trial period to determine which one you like best. Some members have had problems getting the key for Win500. I use Butel ARC500 Basic which is all you need for programming the scanner. The Pro version provides logging.

Thank you..I got lucky and figured it out. I absolutely LOVE this way. Now...I'm uploading but the previous frequencies I put it in get replaced by the new ones. I checked the list I want them to fall under but the previous ones disappear. Thoughts?

It has been a long time since I programmed one of those scanners manually. I would have to pull out my old scanner to refamiliarize myself. I programmed a large trunked system manually on a Radio Shack Pro-197 which is an older mobile version of your scanner. I wish I hadn't. If you have a limited number of talkgroups or frequencies to program, it is feasible to do it manually. The one thing that really consumes time is that you have to enter a 2 digit code for each character of alpha tags. It is so much faster and easier using software. You can type the characters directly from the keyboard. The software also allows you to view everything in the system at a glance. You don't have to step through menus to view each item one at a time. It definitely reduces the number of programming errors. It helps to know how to program manually if you are caught without your computer, but programming a large system can take forever.

Yes. Whatever you have programmed in the scanner will be overwritten when you transfer from the software to the scanner. Best practice is to READ from the scanner first, then make the updates you want in the software, then WRITE to the scanner, and SAVE with a new file name. That'll preserve whatever you had before and include the updates you made.
