• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Kpg46xm would be an oem cable, the 46U is the old USB cable.
This sounds like a driver issue to me.
The other way is to take a db9 to db25 adapter or cable, and a USB to db9, plug it into the rear db25 and try to read it that way. I have done this with the older radios nx800 and 8180's when the mic jack is not working.

I would for you sanity, get the 46XM cable for faster reading/writing.

I have a question. I have a NX-5700 that I can't read threw the mic port. I can read other radios that I have so I am thinking it's something with the mic. What kind of cable are you using to read it threw the db25 port i am wanting to try it that way.

I've seen a few NX-5000 mobiles where something in the display board failed, causing this issue. A new display board fixed it, or you can temporarily swap the head with another NX-5000 for programming.

Not to resurrect an older thread... but I too am having issues. I am using the KPG-46z Cable. I can go into test mode and toggle channels, key radio, etc. But when I read the radio I am met with a com error and the radio beeps and resets. Anyone seen this before?

Hold the key with the overlapping squares and turn the radio on. That will put you into Radio Info mode.
I think may be the issue. It looks like 4.24 came out in April of 2020, 4.20 is from December 19. Now I get to figure out how to upgrade to the newer s/w

There was a funky software/firmware change made around 4.1 - 4.20, but I think you are above that. But it wouldn't hurt to update firmware to a newer version.

Maybe @kd4efm can refresh my memory about the firmware/software thing.

From the TSB I am reading, software version 4.20 is for F/W 4.20 and older.

KPG-D1N V4.20 - KENWOOD myTools (kenwoodusa.com)

Hopefully he can point me to the exact s/w version I will need. Thanks for your help!

if it does not have kwd-5100cv on it, you did not get the licenses. Radio is p25 ready

Just ordered 4 P25 licenses. Talk about an unanticipated expense. These radios were bought without any input from the agency that dispatches for them so there have been a few surprises with these.

are there good reliable places to order a Kpg46xm ??? My local kenwood radio dealer is not a reliable source for purchasing anything (my company is still waiting on parts for a project they started 3 years ago).
