• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Let’s try and settle this debacle once and for all:
The Idiots’ Guide to Programming an XTS: Just don’t and buy a nice scanner. 😆
It’s expensive, complicated, and has many potential legal problems associated with it. Basically not worth all the hassle- and I should know. If it weren’t for all the headaches, frustration, and man-hours I put into my XTS, I’d have sold it for $50 bucks by now.

It's not complicated for anyone with at least a room temp IQ, let's be honest. The concept is simple.
“Room temp IQ”, that’s a good one. You’re right, it isn’t complicated once one gets familiar with the process. But starting out, it can be.

. I know and understand that the sys key has to be legally obtained- period. Which I did for my XTS.
If you legally obtained a system key, that means the system administrator gave you the system key. And if that’s the case, why didn’t you just ask for a subscriber ID as well? Or just make up an ID to use since the sys admin knew what you were doing.

I second that. If you legally obtained a system key, you'd have authorization to be on the system. That's literally the only reason to be given legitimate access to a system key. If you had authorization to be on the system then programming would be provided for you.

It's simply a lie to state you got a system key legitimately if you are asking for help programming your radio.

It's better to say nothing than to open your mouth and let a lie fall out of it.

I suppose a little more explanation on my specific case and situation would go a long way here. I don’t personally have CPS on any of my devices. Why? I only have one XTS and have no desire to have more than that. I love my XTS, but due to how complicated programming is I prefer my scanners.
A good friend of mine who works for the EMA provided me with everything I needed to program my XTS. I wanted the hands on experience since I prefer to be tech savvy with any electronic I operate. So he taught me how to use CPS. What I should and should not do. He “gave me” the system key, meaning how to properly use it for programming. I don’t actually have the system key on me so to speak. I’ll boldly assume he uses his subscriber ID since our county still uses XTS 3 & 5K’s for our P25 P1 system and he oversees the EMA’s radio programming.
I’m not in public safety- just a listener. So I don’t need to toy with the radio every day as if it were an actual scanner. If I ever need anything done to my XTS (which so far I haven’t since we initially set it up), I can just text him and we’ll figure it out from there. I hope this clears up a lot. I definitely did not mean for any of my previous comments to make me sound sketchy or naïve. Everything done to my XTS was done legally and was overseen by a proper authority.
