Henderson PD has already started to encrypted several channels, including SWAT. By the end of this year, all of the channels are expected to be encrypted.

They won't. They send PII including socials over them all the time. That's enough justification (as if they need any) to encrypt.
There’s even a local fire department, I think the Boulder city fire department, that is encrypted. Sooner or later everything will be 100% encrypted. Most of the casinos are still on encrypted with the exception of Caesars.

Indeed, although I think they rolled back E on the fire dept side. PD is still encrypted though.

With encryption less people in the know of the places they live and what’s going on. Police won’t get community help anymore.

I understand what you are saying, but realsitically how many people outside of your radio friends actually have a radio or care about this? The media will get upset because they lose access, but they may have already worked a deal to be able to listen in. I work in the radio industry and outside of even a few in the business, the average citizen does not seem to be bothered. Some even would say "oh you can still listen? my dad had a scanner back in 1922"

Actually a lot of friends simply know I have a scanner and when they see a bunch of police cars or smoke or Federal vehicles racing down the street etc’. They always text me asking what’s going on. Now I’ll just save the FOIA request website link to the Police and that will be my answer. I have doubt the News has ability to monitor more likely they have a liason officer that responds to questions from the News.

In Las Vegas, the news all have agreements with Metro to have a radio programmed with their P25 AES keys. I submitted a request sometime ago and they sent me a copy of all the contracts that they have with the media. Happy to post that document here since it’s public record. The media have to purchase the Motorola radio and the radio bureau at Metro does the programming. But, practically speaking, I don’t know of any News stations that actively sit there and monitor and react to what they hear over the radio. They almost always monitor a News Desk email inbox for press releases and then they take action based on those.
