The HP-1 is not "dependent" on the database. The built in database is an extra, you don't even have to use it. You can enter systems, sites and frequencies manually just like any other scanner only it's a lot easier. Using Sentinel you create favorite lists and then either copy from the Sentinel database or enter the systems, sites and frequencies manually. Then download to the HP-1. I only use the "full database" zip code entry feature when I'm traveling out of my local area. Locally I select from my personal favorite lists, police, fire, business etc and it only scans the channels I want. I encourage anyone interested in the HP-1 to download Sentinel and try it out. You don;t have to have an HP-1 to learn how easy it is.

I think all of you know it all people don't know anything . Just because you haven't had a particular issue with this radio doesn;t make someone else dumb. Actually you are the less intelligent . There are issues where the Homepatrol where it is not optimized for certain areas or task .Not saying the radio is a bust either . If you can't offer help stay out of it .

Other areas to consider .These type of radios are data base dependent. I have seen databases that do not have correct info or info entered under a total different heading then you would expect ,such as a state agency for a given area being assigned to a local city or county entity instead of residing with the rest of that states agencies talk groups , frequencies, or type of service . You are totally at the mercy of the database. In most cases they are pretty accurate, but not perfect. Check the RR database and find what category your desired agency is listed under & then out to the side determine the type service , Law dispatch, multi-tac, etc.

I notice your last post in here is over a year old now, but this bears repeating.........

As others have pointed out, your claim that a Home Patrol user is "totally at the mercy of the database" is 100% false and totally inaccurate.

Please get your facts straight before making such irresponsible statements that may influence potential buyers and newcomers to the scanning hobby.

I am reposting the earlier link from Monitoring Times plus some others that clearly states where this radio obtains it's info. Please examine these links to see where professionals clearly state that the HomePatrol relies on the Radio Reference database. It is true if you purchase Extreme or other software and have the know how and or desire you can program systems into your Hp-1 . But it is not plug and play for everyone right out of the box.I see where Uniden is releasing some new updates in August that may help with programming . Cool.
Thanks, your fellow hobbyist .

It is correct that the main database comes directly from RadioReference. However, using Sentinel, you can create new systems, add channels to existing systems, etc about as easily as for any other scanner. So, if the RRDB-derived information is not sufficient, it is quite easy for the technically able to supplement the data. The MT Article from 2010 was written before that capability was added.

I'm not sure when the Scancat document was written, but it is out of date in this regard, as well.

The Easier to Read manual has it correct. In the 6th paragraph it does say that you can program things into a Favorites List, even if it is not in the main database.

The Extreme Upgrade adds this ability in the scanner itself (along with some other significant enhancements for system analysis and discovery).

I am not aware of any announcement regarding an August update. ??

If I have to modify the database with the favorites list because the database is off and incorrect with freqs in wrong category then what use is this radio for when I travel and use the GPS option.

Most (probably greater than 95%) of the RRDB is not incorrect and freqs are in the correct category. The fraction that is not correct is constantly being improved and are not likely to be noticed by a casual traveler.

Paul, is it safe to say that the database as loaded in the HPs for sale right now is significantly out of date? I seem to recall either you or someone else making reference to 2011 in another recent thread. Would it be worthwhile to put in the Easier To Read Manual a "step one" that says "update the database"?

The only thing that I must say is that I haven't owned a Uniden scanner since the BC780XLT

Current production is using Dec 2011. We are going to update production this Summer to use a more recent dB. (For factory building, any load has to pass a QC check which takes time and involves several departments, so it is not practical to update production weekly (plus, it is very easy for 99% of users to do a database update themselves).

One of the first instructions in the O/M (Page 6) tells the user to update the database...

Home Patrol- I think I got it!!!

I think I am now able to receive the law enforcement that I couldn't get before- I think the problem was not having the Central NY Interoperable comm. added to the favorites- lets see what happens-
I want to thank everyone that help me get to this point- . This is a good unit but it really takes time to understand it... my next problem will be able to get the trunking section to work-but will do that at a later time....again THANKS SO MUCH...

Central NY Interoperable comm is trunking. So if you got that to work, you won the war!
If you can shoot me your .hpd file and I will look at it.

receiver failed

Hello group, has any one had a problem with the receiver falling off after an upgrade or just all of a sudden?, I have had several of mine drop out on the 800mhz digital side to nothing, they become stone deaf. after going through all the motions of check and recheck all parameters, they have failed miserably should I send them back or just blow them out on fleabay?

If you put a scanner antenna near a transmitting antenna (ham radio), you can damage the scanners front end circuits.

I've heard of that several times. It is usually the result of a bad SD card, and replacement of same usually solves the issue.
I've heard of it more on the x36 series and not so much on the HP-x series, but it still can happen to either.

Of course, blowing out the front end is another cause.
