I confirmed my PN-60 GPS does infact output NMEA but cannot locate a cable or if it will even work with a scanner. Has anyone used a Delorme with any scanner?

It's NOT NMEA, it uses USB not RS232, no Delorme GPS recivers are NMEA compatable, ALL are USB.

From UPMan quoted from the HP-1 Forum (not verbatum, but you will get the idea)
The HP-1 has a USB port but that port doesn't work the GPS function of the HP-1, that requirers RS232 NMEA output from the GPS.

And for the Delorme GPS PN-60w and PN-60 pages (both say the same re: USB) Earthmate PN-60w with SPOT Satellite Communicator & Topo North America 9.0 - DeLorme

Thanks Viper43, The reason I was asking is a quote from page 81 of my updated manual with latest PN-60 firmware. The last sentance says NMEA Out. So I was hoping all I would need is cable and gender change?

NMEA 0183? Not if it is USB as it is RS232 not USB. And they only APPEAR that way via software, and even then they don't always work via the serial port, I know, been there done that, and I have used Delorme products since they first came out with Street Atlas.

Tom,
Yeah, they have been doing that conversion for a long time. It's because of the way they use the USB port, instead of an actual serial port they turn the USB port into a semi serial port, still not the same, it takes software to convert the USB into quazi serial port then run it through the software serial port to convert the data, thats the grab, there wouldn't be any software port to convert the data for use by the HP-1.

Ok thanks, I have some other GPS's from Garmin that might work. I would have prefered to use the PN-60 as it has the ability to grab a signal anyplace inside my house or car and the Garmin's won't, they need to be by a window.

Yeah, I have several Delorme GPS units but none will work. A couple people have tried to make RS232 type connectors for the Delorme's but I have never heard of any having success with it. A Garmin that has a serial port will work. I just wonder how much longer those will be made though. I just use the "hockey" puck type GPS for the scanners, and the Delorme's and Garmin for the car and truck.

I think I'll get the puck type after some checking around.
Thanks

I'm also looking for a GPS unit that will work with the uniden BCD996XT, Everything I've seen has a usb connector on it for use on a computer, and an adapter won't work without softwear. If anyone has a solution I would appreciate the information, I have an e-trax, and a ms streets gps and neither will work on the scanner.
You would think that they would have gone USB on the scanner my computer doesn't even have an RS232 port. At the price of the scanner, it should have a GPS built in...Ron
