Heard on nearby county EMS dispatch channel on Sunday, 7 June:
"dispatch to all EMS units, @#$ Hospital is on divertance until further notice, All units acknowledge"

Various EMS units then acknowledge the instruction. @#$ is my local hospital less than a mile from me.
@#$ hospital is a for-profit hospital owned by an out of state business company and they normally want all the business they can get.

I assume the meaning is "their ER is full, don't transport to them go to another hospital.

Heard on same channel, 8 June at 8 AM:

"EMS dispatch to all units, @#$ Hospital if OFF divertance at the time, all EMS units acknowledge"

Again, my assumption is the hospital is NOW accepting ER patients again.

I have heard this kind of announcement previously involving the much larger Trauma center in the nearest big city but never before about my small town for-profit hospital.

Am I interpreting the situation correctly?

Maybe they pronounce it a little differently in your area, in Mo. it's called Diversion, as in, all EMS is diverted to any other ER than ours except for severe life threats. Not done in this area any more though, they did away with it.
Could have been due to some situation that they were unable to accept any ER patients. Some have shut down due to Haz-Mat, or mechanical issues within the ER, to no or low staff.

Yes
This could be based on Staffing and/or the Load in the ER or the Availability of BED within the Hosp, not just the ER
or the Hospital is undergoing an EVENT

Georgia Hospital Diversion Status
As you can see not everyone keeps the state updated

Diversion means we are no longer accepting new patients, we may go on partial diversion (pediatric, neuro, cardiac, etc). The decision is made by on site administrators based on census, available staff, resources, etc.

Thanks info. Thanks also for link to Northside hospital web site, That hospital is more than 4 hour drive from my area and so I am not surprised that the info listed does not include any near me. I can get same day delivery of Wall Street Journal but not of Atlanta newspapers (odd since my edition of the WSJ is printed in Georgia) Even though I live in GA I am closed to JAX than ATL. My hospital is owned by CYH, a TN company.

My recording of the announcement does not include a text converter of how they spell their words!

one evening here

a call went out that someone was being attacked by a known attic. the unit that was sent asked "attic" and after a little time it was corrected to addict. well a caller takes the call and types it in so they give what they get. this is the land where gulf and golf sound the same.

i am not from here.

Diversion, avoidance, "closed", or whatever the hospital (group) calls it, can be for all sorts of different situations or even different levels depending on specific sections of the hospital, as MTS states. The term used in my neck of the woods is 'avoidance' and can be for the emergency room, the cath lab, CT, etc. It can be because there's no more room, or it can be because the equipment is down ('avoidance for CT' is not uncommon in some places). Or it can be because some lunatic took over the ER and is holding people hostage, or the building is on fire, or somebody spilled ethyl-methyl-bad-stuff in an OR, or...

It is diversion. A unit is being "diverted" to another facility due to some condition where they can not accept any more patients.

Divergence has an entirely different, unrelated meaning. If that is what they were actually saying their dispatchers need proper training and supervision.

Everything you hear has to be taken in context. You obviously figured it out by listening to the context of the communication.

Divertance is not even a word, and as for attic, come on, please. We all have computers just Google a word if you don't know what it means.

Fortunately, GA
Having lived in GA for the last 16 years, I still have a problem with some of the dispatchers in the N Central GA area. Not to forget the units calling dispatch. I'll have to put the TG or frequency on hold to hear the rest of the comms to figure out what's what:confused:
I thought growing up with the Andy Griffith show would help:lol:
