I'd like to be able to stream, including alpha tags, so anyone can listen without installing any additional software on their part. there is a feed from Milwaukee including the text display, that I can listen to in my Linux media player, so I know it can be done. I'd assume it would be the same in Windows media player.

Most require a 24/7 commitment, but it doesn't cost you anything.
Then, you only provide one low-bandwidth stream and never have to worry about the dns stuff or firewall issues.
There is a forum here at RR just for streaming audio BTW.

As Trooperdude noted, there is a pretty active forum right here on RR just for streaming scanners. A bunch of us who do sttreaming, post there. In the meantime, a couple info pointers you may want to consider:
1) Streaming with alpha tags requires a Uniden based scanner (with serial or USB port) in conjunction with a free software utility (Talk Group Monitor) written by Gordon at www.scangeorgia.com.
2) Only WinAmp and Real Player can receive alpha tags on the user end.
3) Streaming just audio can be done with any brand scanner.
4) As noted earlier in this post, if you don't want to do all the software & home network firewall stuff yourself, then you can reach out to the various sites that will do the "hosting" for you. Gordon provides this type of service for "feed volunteers".
5) Scott as www.scancapecod.us wrote an excellent tutorial on how to set-up a scanner stream. The tutorial is located on his site.

What is the advantage of using a third party hosting?
I think this will make your stream less reliable.

My feed keeps going down because kids reboot the machine or unplug the router/modem and then I end up having to reconfigure my port forwarding. My family is all to familiar with the rant: "2 seconds of unplugging a plug and/or pushing a button for you becomes 15 minutes of fighting with the computer for me! Leave it alone! Rawr!"
Sigh. They don't listen.
