I have this same discussion going on in the Wisconsin forum. I'd like to be able to stream, including alpha tags, so anyone can listen without installing any additional software on their part. there is a feed from Milwaukee including the text display, that I can listen to in my Linux media player, so I know it can be done. I'd assume it would be the same in Windows media player.

Search for and download "Windows Media Encoder" then run the scanner software for your scanner and open the window that shows the current TG/system being receive. Set WME for proper bit rate, capture mode, network port. Set a static private IP on the PC's network properties like 192.168.1.50, then open the port for that IP on the router. Go to DynDNS.org or no-ip and create a domain so it is easy to remember plus it updates as your dynamic IP changes. It should look like this mms://scankilleen.no-ip.org:7733

Or just ask one of the 3-4 places out there that will re-stream your feed from a high bandwidth data center if you can stream for them.

Most require a 24/7 commitment, but it doesn't cost you anything.

Then, you only provide one low-bandwidth stream and never have to worry about the dns stuff or firewall issues.

There is a forum here at RR just for streaming audio BTW.

i stream my bct15 sometimes so i can listen while i'm at work ... i use Icecast, Oddcast, and Talkgroup Monitor (for the text tags, from Gordon at scangwinnett.com) ..... it works beautifully with winamp, the text tags come in great :)

its a bear to setup, but once you do you'll see that its well worth it :):)

Do you happen to know of any that stream icecast or shoutcast? My feed keeps going down because kids reboot the machine or unplug the router/modem and then I end up having to reconfigure my port forwarding. My family is all to familiar with the rant: "2 seconds of unplugging a plug and/or pushing a button for you becomes 15 minutes of fighting with the computer for me! Leave it alone! Rawr!"

Sigh. They don't listen.

AZScanner & Company:

As Trooperdude noted, there is a pretty active forum right here on RR just for streaming scanners. A bunch of us who do sttreaming, post there. In the meantime, a couple info pointers you may want to consider:

1) Streaming with alpha tags requires a Uniden based scanner (with serial or USB port) in conjunction with a free software utility (Talk Group Monitor) written by Gordon at www.scangeorgia.com.

2) Only WinAmp and Real Player can receive alpha tags on the user end.

3) Streaming just audio can be done with any brand scanner.

4) As noted earlier in this post, if you don't want to do all the software & home network firewall stuff yourself, then you can reach out to the various sites that will do the "hosting" for you. Gordon provides this type of service for "feed volunteers".

5) Scott as www.scancapecod.us wrote an excellent tutorial on how to set-up a scanner stream. The tutorial is located on his site.

Have to disagree with number 2, wifirefeeds has several feeds using tags via windows media player. I agree with 4-5 100%, Gordans scangeorgia is tops !

Thanks for the tip on the wifirefeeds.com site. I just went there and they do a very nice job. It looks like they are using an "embedded" version of Windows Media Player to show the tags.

What I was referring to was the Window Media Player that resides on an end-users PC currently does not support receiving alpha tags when connecting to a stream that's not embedded at a site. At least that's what Gordon has taught me, among many other things :)

What is the advantage of using a third party hosting?

I think this will make your stream less reliable.

I use Wave Streamer to "host" my two live scanner feeds. The advantage is that the number of listeners doesn't matter, beacuse it won't effect your internet connection. When you pay a media host, you're actually using their server, so when listeners connect, they're connecting to the stream host server, not your computer.

When I first started the feed, I was doing the whole Icecast, DNS option and my internet connection sucked. The more people that connected, the slower my internet connection was. This makes things very much reliable. No one has access to your computer in any form or fashion and stream host companies have measures in place to keep your feed from going down barring some unforseeable misfortune such as the stream host's data center blowing up.

I use an OLD linux box for mine, and start shoutcast during boot. Also helps in the event of a power outage, it will just come back to life. Mine is on a Pentium 2, 400 mhz with 256mb ram. I have never had good luck finding people to host my stream for me though with more bandwidth (would be great if I could find a new home for it with a little more pipe).

If you would like help setting up a linux box for doing it with an old system let me know.. (I dont even have a GUI installed on mine, run it without a monitor or keyboard.. just sits on a shelf in the bedroom)..
